I just couldn't believe neither John nor Eko said anything about "where does this tube go?" If the people working there in the Pearl were just sending note books out through it, that means there are records somewhere. Either the tube goes directly to someone in charge, which would mean they have to be fairly close. Or it could just take the notebooks to some sort of storage location. Either they get stored for later pick-up, or they get stored because they aren't needed by Hanso. This could be another experiment just like the button pushing. So, by following the tube you either find the head cheese or you find records of hatch activity that may prove useful. Either way, seems like a worthy endeavor to me.

They all sure do look a bit freaked out when they are looking at whatever they are looking at. I doubt it is the others.....I would suspect that wouldn't hold their attention as much as send them running. It must be something new to them.

As far as who is talking to Michael, I suppose saying "an other" would be pretty obvious.

My gut says that the "?" is in the underneath the roots, hence needing the axe. I don't think it was just for climbing or opening the hatch door. I thought "?" was just below Pearl. And yes, I would have tried to follow the tube, or st least check to see if there are any other exits. maybe a false wall, etc..
