I wouldn't call it "no advertising" as the films were rereleased through the 80's. And I don't think it makes a difference that Return to OZ was for one summer only, as well as....

These are the tie-ins that I was thinking of as well.

I don't understand why an "advertisement" would draw ire, as everything advertises everything else. We purchase advertisements from them all the time and run in to see the new advertisements. Just one very similar example - The Lion King parade was a huge, wonderful advertisement. I have no illusions about any of that.
