One bit of advice: don't bother to learn how to say "excuse me, do you have a menu in English?" If they do, you won't have to ask for it. If you have to ask, they don't.
How true !! Even at McDonalds, they flipped over their counter-mat menu, and there it was in English for us !!

So, curious - as Snowflake is - in regards to costs, budget, and what to expect. Is there a planing site somewhere?

Google is a good start.

We usually plan:
$5-10 for breakfast, same for lunch, $25 for Dinner
The rail link posted a few posts up gives you prices for travel.

Good cheap chain here: http://www.toyoko-inn.com/eng/ if you want a western-style hotel

There's a big list of Tokyo hotels available. Just find the dot and hover.
