One of the reasons I loved taking the 63 shortcut back is that it eaaased me back into "civilization," and was the perfect link to create a slow build-up from the almost pure nature of the national park to the megatropolis of Los Angeles (which was appropriately fog-shrouded and thus invisible when I arrived after one of the most scenic 6-hour drives I've ever taken).

Better yet, the 63 shortcut will provide a much more stunning approach to the Sierra-Nevada Mountains than the pure 180 approach from Fresno. Even if it didn't cut off 30 miles of the journey (most of it from the boring stretch of the 99), it would be a worthwhile route to King's Canyon for this factor alone. OMG, the views of the snow-clad peaks of the towering mountains, and the tawny foothills teeming with Oak trees. Absolutely beautiful.

Thanks again, NirvanaMan.
