Assuming a four-lane freeway, I prefer the two middle lanes (lanes 2 & 3). That way I have two lanes to change into when needed.

Well, I believe it is in a roundabout way. One of the laws in driving says to keep right except when passing - at least here in California (as I learned in one of many driving school experiences). Granted, I doubt it is ever enforced.
