Well, for some good news, I picked up Alex's and my wristbands for HP at Borders, and we're in the second group!

Groggy and a bit sore. Limited voice as the anesthesia played havoc on her throat. But overall, doing fine.

I ran out of gas today. While waiting in line at the gas station. It was hot. I was there waiting... and waiting... and COME ON NOW HURRY UP! Finally the guy in front of me moved and sputter sputter. Out of gas. Luckily a few guys ran over and helped push the van the few feet up to the tank. Well - now I know just how low it will go don't I.

Can I ask a sensitive question? I think I can. We can all talk openly right? If I hurt anyone's feelings by asking, I'm truly sorry. Having said that - here goes. At what point does the health care of your pet become too expensive to pay for? That is - that you decide to let nature take it's course or put your beloved pet down due to a lack of money?

I don't have pets due to my husbands allergies and never really did growing up. But always loved cats and made friends with many in our neighborhood growing up or at relatives houses. I can see the attachment. It's a member of the family.

But it's not like health care for humans where - if you're seriously ill and in the emergency room - they'll give you medical care and ask you for payment after the fact. And as you were saying - they want a good chunk of the money upfront. Although I guess you could make payments and all that. And I've heard of animal health insurance -

so barring that from the equation - at what price is it too much money?

I think it is a fair question and easily discussed in the abstract, but previous experience on other boards suggests that it is a discussion that generally doesn't go well in the midst of someone actually dealing with the question.

Short answer: it varies quite a bit from person to person and possibly even from pet to pet with the same person.

I don't know that there's an absolute point... I think it's a balance of likelihood of success, quality of life afterward, and cost of care.

For Barnum, who has a strong likelihood of recovery, even if he won't be quite 100%, it's totally worth it.
