Well, I think it's attention, really. Someone might feel like they'll never make a big impact on the world in a positive way, so they'll do something else to make themselves feel important. Sometimes, people will stoop to any level just to gain notoriety.

But, that doesn't excuse the behavior, hence why I'd want to put them in the middle of it, and make them fight for their own lives. Or, at the very least, light their house on fire, leaving them to try and put it out by themselves, so they can feel the same hopelessness as all the victims of their crime.
