No, I'd prefer her to give a large sum to charity, period. Sure, print up a large cardboard check and get photographed, that's cool. But this whole "I wrote it with my own hands" stuff that gets fans into a froth of ecstasy is just self-serving, IMHO..

But without the auction of the book the money would come from her own pocket. With the auction, someone gets to donate a large sum to a worthy charity, and in return gets a very limited edition of a book... whether it becomes available in print is moot, because there will only ever be 7 handwritten versions. That's not a big run, really.

If I were Bruce Wayne or some other philanthropic billionaire I'd buy it !!

Holy crap!!! (But hey, if you were going to donate that amount of cash, at least you got something valuable in return.... wouldn't it be a massive tax writeoff? And you could loan the book to a museum for a lot of money for the kids to file by it? And your own kids could sell it for a lot of money if they ever get addicted to crack and are broke?)

We're incredibly excited to announce that Amazon has purchased J.K. Rowling’s The Tales of Beedle the Bard at an auction held by Sotheby’s in London. The book of five wizarding fairy tales, referenced in the last book of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is one of only seven handmade copies in existence. The purchase price was £1,950,000, and Ms. Rowling is donating the proceeds to The Children's Voice campaign, a charity she co-founded to help improve the lives of institutionalized children across Europe.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard is extensively illustrated and handwritten by the bard herself--all 157 pages of it. It's bound in brown Moroccan leather and embellished with five hand-chased hallmarked sterling silver ornaments and mounted moonstones.

I beleive that one of the conditions of sale was that the buyer was not allowed to publish or copy it.
But maybe the stories could appear in another form?

I was thinking more along the lines of some kind of announcement from Rowling that the book would come out in some sort of mass market media with the proceeds possibly going to charity. She did something similiar with the two (or was it three) books for Comic Relief.

With Amazon putting out "summaries" of the chapeters I'd guess it would put more pressure on her to put them out for everyone.
