As much as I love Vietnamese, I admit it, I've never had a Vietnamese sandwich! Apparently a great place here near 6th & Clement (weather and the state of my cold permitting) I may venture out this weekend for a sample.

Go, if it is good it is worth it (I'm not big on Vietnamese food; it is the closest I come to just dismissing an entire ethnic cuisine but bahn mi is a fantastic thing). There is a place in Oakland's Chinatown where they are fantastic and only like $2.50 each. We used to go get a couple each and take them with us to A's games.

Be warned though, the peppers they use them are essentially made of plasma taken from the surface of the sun. But they are very vital. Get the peppers but take them out before actually eating the sandwich. It'll be bland if you never had them in there but just for having touched the sandwich it will have a decent spiciness to it.

I just had Pho with a phriend for lunch today. (Sorry, couldn't resist the word play.)

I'm sometimes squeamish with Vietnamese places, but this one listed all the ingredients in each dish, so I didn't have to worry about eating something that would send me to drive the porcelain bus.

In regards to provincial Vietnamese cuisine, it's some pretty amazing stuff, and doesn't smell "funny" at all, like some of the more traditional foods.

I love Vietnamese food - except I always pass on the Durian. It's a gross, foul, disgusting smelling fruit that is supposed to be delicious, but I can't bring myself to eat it.
