Red herrings, much the same way that multiple cast members of "Dallas" were filmed shooting J.R., in order to keep the real shooter's identity a secret.

Part 1 of the 3 hour finale was shown again before parts 2 & 3 with an extended press conference. In the extra footage we learn the identity of the other 3 (of the 8 who made it off the plane in Jack's fabricated story).
Boone died of massive internal injuries soon after making it to the island. Libby died a few weeks later (no explanation of how). Charlie drowned a few weeks before their rescue. So the math works out now. 8 plane survivors - 3 dead + Aaron = Oceanic 6. |

I think what indicates that Locke might have had to move the island again is the fact that he died on the mainland. It's one thing for him to have chosen to left the island for a short time. It's another to leave long enough to have died, that seems unlikely whucg kinda implies that he left and couldn't go back, just like Ben. At least, that's the conclusion to which the writers are trying to lead us.

Hmm. I recall that he was in the books as a suicide, but was likely killed by other means. I don't think the writers are leading us to conclude that he had to move the island at all. If his job, upon leaving, was to make sure that everyone who left must come back with him, I think he would be gone for a long time. First, he'd have a tough job convincing people to go back to the island. Second, some of those who need to go back may be MIA. I believe Penny and Desmond are in hiding, and if Ben is having a hard time finding her, I imagine Locke would just as hard a time.
We also (unless I missed something) don't know how long Locke was gone. Or, if he is time traveling, whether he leaves and returns to the island multiple times. |

I'm not so sure about that. Michael left the island prematurely and was unable to die (no matter the circumstances) until Jacob/Christian basically told him his destiny was fulfilled. If John was able to die, the island was done with him. (So maybe he did move the island. Or maybe he didn't.)

I think those endings were red herrings to spoil any spoilers. I have a feeling that they always intended to have it be Locke.
