Last night, after our power came back up, the computer fan was running verrrry loud. The monitor said no input signal and there was also no power going from the computer to the keyboard or mouse.

The computer wouldn't turn off. I tried holding in the button and nothing happened. I checked all of the connections, and everything else is working. The only problem is the tower.

Am I totally screwed?

If you're lucky, it's just a shot power supply. If you're unlucky, whatever fried the supply might have fried the mother board.

That is what I am afraid of.

I consider myself fairly computer literate, but when it comes to hardware issues I realize just how much I don't know.

The good news is that in all likelihood none of your data was damaged. If it turns out to be something more serious than the power supply, odds are the hard drive is still in tact.

Thank You!! I will deal with what comes of this, but the thought of losing some of the data (yeah, I really need to back up my pictures) bothered me.

I didn't realize how dependant I am on my computer, until it wasn't available. Luckily this is one of the few websites that is not blocked at work.

Replacing a power supply in a tower isn't too difficult. You don't even need to be computer literate to do the task. You just need to make sure that you are replacing it with a comparable power supply.

Over simplifying it just a little bit, it is just a matter of removing the old power supply by way of a few screws, unplugging it (probably a couple of different plugs), plugging in the new power supply and mounting it back in the box.

Probably best not to do it yourself. If it is something more than a power supply, just replacing the supply might cause further damage.

Oops. must have read too fast. I thought it was narrowed down to the power supply.

I am taking my computer tonight to get fixed.

After talking to the person who will be fixing it, he thinks it could be the mother board and not the power supply. Either way I am hoping to have it back by the weekend.

It is the motherboard and the CPU. While he is working on it he is also upgradung the memory. I am still not sure why, but he told me my mother told him to do it.
