From the main menu, the Wii does not show you which of your friends are online. I think it just periodically connects to the nintendo wifi network and checks if you have messages and whatnot.

MK DOES tell you when your friends are online and what they are doing (as it has done a "hard" connect to the Nintendo WFC).
