I believe that people who make outrageous claims shouldn't be surprised when they are called on it. (Especially on this board!)

I made no outrageous claims, it is a family story of how the starter came into our family and oral history is sometimes flawed now bug off.

I'm sorry if I misinterpreted you, but your post came across to me like you were making an outrageous claim to try and "prove" how much better your sourdough is. In other words: a silly attempt at one-upsmanship.

No two starters are the same, and determining who has the better starter is a matter of taste, nothing more. IMO, age does not guarantee a better flavor. Flavor comes from the particular combination of yeast and bacteria in the starter. (And that can change over time.)

For what it's worth, I thought Promo-Man's post to be a rather cute and flip 'history' of his starter- and I think his family lore would probably fit in quite well with mine, which tends to blur and outright ignore the historically factual lines of demarcation. Were he a member of my family, Gen. Pershing's great-grandmother's sister-in-law would have initiated the starter. (Or Daniel Boone's wife).

That's not how it read to me.

Tell you what let's expand our starters and exchange them then we can both try both of them in our own homes.

Or we could arrange to have a sourdough pancake taste off

So do I [to Kevy], but I am having visions of the people on Antiques Roadshow learning that the Chinese table saved by a great-grandfather during the Boxer Rebellion was actually purchased from the J.C. Pennys catalog in 1967.

Served 'em right for not doing their research.

Was that Kevy who asked if some tangent of talk here was silly. Um, Pot and Kettle ever go out on a date?

JW, I hope you don't think I was impuning your research or integrity. I just couldn't resist making some crack about the DCA sourdough exhibit ... from wence I, for one, gleaned all the sourdough knowledge I have.

* * * *

On a more pertinent note. I have decided not to rent a Cabin 2.5. The responses I got from the waiting list people were about 50/50, but it didn't seem to me reliable enough that a cabin would be cost effective.

Granted, even at $70/night, that's still roughly half of what decent Valley accomodations are running. But I can't afford either. I was a dope for not jumping in to the original cabin with the thought of paying for 4 nights and staying only two.

Well, being that two of the people ahead of me on the waiting list have dropped out, I'm just going to trust to providence. One way or the other, I intend to be there on the LashPair's first day in Yosemite Valley ... after all, I'm the one who nudged them endlessly to go there.

So if I have to stay at a Motel 6 in Fresno, I'll be there for that day. But I can't afford $300 to stay a couple of nights in Yosemite. Of course, I could be in better financial shape come next April ... but considering what April 15 is going to mean to my finances next year, I seriously doubt it.

Maybe closer to the date something will make itself known.
