http://www.hearstcastle.com/

Here is the link to the site.

I am sure someone else will be able to explain better than I the history of the Castle.

And, I am hoping that someone can tell me the name of the Ranch that was turned into a military base...years ago it said you could stay there. I would like to know if you can still stay there.

Darn it but I lost the site..........

Oh, um, yes, the story is really magnificent about Randolph Hearst. A publishing magnet? {is that the word?} The castle, wow, you really need to google it or something, it is too much to just put in a post. He built the castle and brought all of the finest things, made it a playground for he and his friends.

I googled pre-asking, but didn't find the Hearst site incredibly helpful. So I went with the lazy route and asked here.

I think you mean "Magnate", but hell lets kick "magnet" around anyways:

I hear he was bi-polar, but that Marion Davies was still drawn to him. Far from being poles apart, there was an attraction. Others say that he was a magnet for $hit.

Either way, Hearst Castle has to be experience to be believed. The orange blossoms in spring are heavenly, and the panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean (aka The Big Wet Patch) and surrounding mountain peaks are awesome. I can't wait.

Love and hugs,

The Stoat XXX.

Thanks, Stoat! Yeah, I shouldn't post without making sure what I'm posting. Words float around my mind, not always in the proper form!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randolph_Hearst

This wiki entry gives a lot of info about Hearst, but, there really is so much history there. But, this is something.

I didn't click on the links, just read the main article. Maybe there is more within the article....

There are also a plethora of books on Hearst.

Stoat's previously mentioned Davies book, The Times We Had was based on tapes of interviews Davies gave in her home, much of it while in her cups. If you want to read an excellent, and I do mean excellent bio of Davies, Fred Lawrence Guiles' 1972 volume is one to read.

<begin derail rant>
As much as I enjoy Citizen Kane (which started this derail) Davies was ill served by the film and the lore of the film. Welles later stated that Susan Alexander was not based on Davies, but that is not how Davies has been remembered generally. Pity, she was a fine comedienne and a decent dramatic actress. Happily, those opinions seem to be changing with a few films being shown in regular rotation and a good documentary, too. <end derail rant>
