And, yes, I'll probably buy the third book to see (hopefully) how this all gets resolved.

The books are not straight male friendly. This is basically tepid young adult fiction with a likeable (for a while) klutz heroine who finds a bad boyfriend who's not so bad after all. The books are page turners in the sense that the basic plot draws you in while most of the actual writing is best ignored. The courtship scenes are cloying. If you've ever watched a movie or read a book and had the sense that the author was filling it with cute but not terribly compelling details from their own lives that they had no perspective on, these books will give you that feeling in spades.

Given the author's Mormonism, I'd like to think there's something interesting here about persecuted sects, marriage, eternal family, etc. It's not getting through.
