I agree with that article. It's not saying, "Don't live in a home with these style choices," it' saying, "If you're trying to sell your house, you're not doing yourself any favors."

So I'm the only one that thinks it takes it too far? I mean, I'm not saying that certain aspects aren't right, but I really think it goes overboard in suggesting things which are so specific to today that they will soon be outdated themselves.

Yes, they will be outdated. But it's what sells NOW, and that's what matters if you're selling your house.

If I see one more square of travertine tile I'll puke, but if I want to get the most out of my house, I'll damn well put travertine in if I can afford it because that's what makes people go "oooooh."

People do some really unfortunate remodels to their homes based on trends. The remodels are good for a few years then they look old and dated and the home loses value. That's not the result you want from any sort of remodel. I've seen some really tacky and sad things done to what was good architecture. A smart home owner won't make bad choices unless they plan on a) living there for ever or b) are willing to do another remodel when it comes time to sell.

I wish there were more suggestions in that article for things to do if you have no budget. I replaced the carpet and vinyl downstairs with laminate, which was apparently approved, and my paint colors are definitely not 80s (cream, yellow, mint green, yellow-green, strong light blue, and fire-engine red), but I can't afford to ditch the giant-ass mirrors or put in new light fixtures - much less spring for new countertops and appliances.
