Number portability (that's what it's called) has been in effect for about a year and a half. You can switch providers and still keep your number. You can even switch a land-line number to a mobile phone (or vice-versa).

The only problem you may run into is that your old provider may not let go of the number until you are paid up-to-date. A definite catch-22 in this case.
