Probably four or five years ago I saw Julie Andrews and Blake Edwards walking arm in arm at the LA Music Center. It was a strange experience for LA, simply because unless you're a tourist, seeing a famous person is no big deal. Life goes on, and oh look, there's a celebrity, lets continue our conversation.

But for Julie and Blake, as they passed by, people stopped what they were doing to look at them. The volume level dropped. They were real Hollywood Royalty!

I never met Blake Edwards, but I did hobnob with Julie Andrews at a White House reception. Even there everyone stopped to look and the volume level dropped. Royalty indeed.

When I was seven or eight, I read a book of baseball history that had a chapter on Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Bob Feller and Stan Musial as heroes of the transition from the Ruthian era. Musial's still alive, perhaps because he only lost one year of his career to World War II.

I never met Blake Edwards, but I did see Joe DiMaggio on the street in San Francisco once. I wanted to knock him down so I could help him up.
