And haven't they pretty much established that the sideways world is a complete illusion? I think that something significant may happen when the surviving alternate Losties collectively realize what is going on, and my best guess is they will somehow become involved in the final battle, if that's where things are headed. Alternate timeline seems almost like a "Last Temptation of Chrsit" story arc.
