There's a huge precedent for this which started in the 60's. They have always bent the rules to get multiple Doctors together.

The destruction of Gallfrey was created for the 2005 reboot. All the angst about pushing the button and being the last of his kind was a new thing that added a different angle to the character. Before then, there was a lot of plot regarding his status as a Gallifrey outcast. This is a way to say - we're going to go back to the original style. In a way, it's a reboot reboot. Reverse the polarity! I was pretty sick of him bringing up the destruction of his species all the damn time, from all three of the latest Doctors.

Zygons? That entire plot line seemed superfluous to the already constrained narrative.

I'd argue that they tried to do all the classic plots in this episode, including an alien attack on Earth, a period piece, crazy Gallifrey tech, etc. I'm glad it wasn't Sontarans or Cybermen or Daleks, AGAIN.

Just my perspective. If there's one thing we can all reserve the right to do, it's judge Doctor Who. And if the signals they're throwing out come true, the show is going to change a lot, and the Smith fans are going to do a lot of grumbling.
