Wiki Questions

I'm doing some research into the World of Wiki and was wondering if there are any knowledgable people here that have Wiki knowledge.

I am currently working on the rebirth of the dearly departed Yesterdayland.com as Retroland.com. There are basicially 2 components to the board - a discussion section and a "Memories" section. The memories area seems like it might benefit from the Wiki application, but I have never used it in any format.

I know Moonie was looking into the Wiki idea for Disney at one point and MousePod was also thinking along those lines. Any advice you have about this gem of a program would be appreciated.

Okay, I'm showing my ignorance here. What is Wiki? and What is yesterdayland.com? Clearly I've missed something.

Yesterdayland was a great site dedicated to the pop culture nostalgia of our general age group. You could talk music, tv, lunch boxes, whatever. Our own Boss Radio was co-guru of it.

It's coming back, though? W00t!!!

Wiki is a web application with which users can edit entries at will. The best known wiki around is the Wikipedia, a pretty comprehensive encyclopedia run on the wiki system.

The plus is that it's a constantly growing database, with anyone who knows what they're talking about being able to give input. Things can easily be corrected and updated with little work on the part of the adminsitrator.

The bad news is, it's open to incorrect info. Fortunately, you can as an administrator elect to review any input before it gets merged into the live article. Plus, wiki automatically saves previous versions, so if someone erroneously changes something (or screws up formatting), it's easy to revert.

ctually, the resurrected site is up and running - but still in transition. I'm writing FAQ's as I speak along with 12 other things. Fun stuff!!! And VERY exciting!

I'm a guru-minion to the 2 big gurus.

Now about this Wiki stuff. Does anyone have any experience using one of the many wiki programs? The World of Wiki is a fascinating place.

I've used several though generally am not aware of which package I'm using. For personal project I use pbwiki as it is quickly set up, accessible on the web without playing with servres, and serves simple needs fine.

I'm afraid that my wiki project was rather short lived. About all I can do is reccomend a good book on the subject:

"The Wiki Way - Quick collaboration on the web" by Bo Leuf and Ward Cunningham.
