Red- I like Merlot, Zinfandel, and Shiraz.

White- anything but Chardonnay. I like the dessert wines, though Pinot Grigio is yummy, and I like a lot of the Rieslings.

For the undecided, I might suggest a White Merlot. It's not as dark as a regular red, but has some color to it. Looks great in a glass and tastes pretty good. I tried it on a whim, and turns out to be a good experiment. I think I got it at Trader Joe's.
