Someone posted above (perhaps Alex?) that the 140 was blocked by a rockslide, and there was some kind of rigged-river crossing to avoid that section. I have no idea if that's accurate, or what vintage the alleged rockslide is.
![]() In looking plainly at a map, however, Alex's "recommendation" of a shorter route via the 49 vs. the 99 looks to be half-dozen of one as far as distance. But in fact, the 49 is a smaller road, way more curvy, and goes through even less civilization than Turlock and Merced. So that's the one I'll pick!! Um, there's not even ANY towns along that road, so I hope there are at least gas stations every coupla hundred miles. |

I know of what Alex speaks. I remember the bridge over the rough water part of the river, a single lane bridge, if I am correct. Eh, it wasn't too bad. I don't know where you are getting on the 49 but it is lovely. There are towns, small. China Camp is one, I think. I've seen it on line as having way more than I've ever seen there. An old gas station turned gift shop is on one of the corners you should pass. I will be curious to hear your report as to how these towns are doing during this recession. Breaks my heart to see the closures.
Ha, my husband sent me a photo from that link I posted...we are soooo jealous!! I will be 'sharing' your trip with him.

The rockslide is a few years old (2006 I think). I have no idea if they intend to ever clear it (it was BIG and the canyon wall is unstable, picture here).
It is pretty much a semi-permanent pair of bridges they have set up (way back in the day the road used to be on the other side of the river anyway) to cross over. It isn't a big deal except for being one lane and therefore you can end up waiting 20 minutes for your turn. I didn't mean to say the rockslide was an obstruction, just that I find it something cool to see. Here's more information on the slide, its impacts, and some possible long term plans for a fix. There's even a video of driving over the bypass bridges. |

Do they still have a photography class? And a tour of the Awahnee?
If you stop by the Yosemite Lodge lobby, to the right of the front desk is a sort of 'concierge' with information about tours as well as on the wall to the right {if you were to walk down the hall {towards the bathrooms on the left!} it lists their programs for the week. The Lodge has speakers there sharing interesting topics, usually at 7 p.m. May be too late? Night time photo classes, too, maybe.... http://www.yosemitepark.com/ Hwy 49 info.... http://www.historichwy49.com/index.html

The 140 is open, but has up to a 15-minute wait time to cross the bridges. I'm thinking this might be our route, simply because I wanna get some pictures and awe over the beauty and power of Nature.
![]() Oh, and we're going to be hanging out in the Valley for a bit before heading up to the cabin. I plan on checking out trail condition info, as well as the "free art classes" that they offer, and can share all of that info with everyone in the evening. ![]() Oh, and I also found the "things to do" guide. Does anyone have a large griddle they can bring? Unfortunately, the one I use is part of the stove...
Oh... And we have chains. there is no way in hell that they'll actually fit my car; but we have them.

HI!
|
I would get gas before you hit the park. While I believe they do have gas in the park, I bet it's not cheap. But, I could be wrong about that.

An important thing to remember!!!
The gas in the park is by the Wawona. I could be wrong but I don't think so. The other place, digging in the memory here, is on the 120 heading out/in Craneflat. If you are coming in on the 140, there is gas right there in El Portal but the one time we had to buy gas there we surely felt gouged. So, yes, heed the warning!!! You can burn up a lot of gas cruising around the valley. One way to save is to park down in the valley and take the free shuttle or walk. Oakhurst, Baby. Top it off.

Yeah, my route is not going to hit even as vast a metropolis as Oakhurst, so we'll just have to pay for gas at the gouge rate in Merced or El Portal.
And, sorry JW, I don't have a large (or any) griddle. If K & T were considering bringing their CampMaster 3000, that would have a good griddle (but then I'm afraid there might be no room for poor SuPeR K! to ride back with them.) ![]() |
