Heheh.
It's not sacrilege or anything, just not for me. I know we're staying in a cabin and it's not quite swank camp ... but to the extent possible, I want to feel like I'm getting away from the modern world and reconnecting for my one puny week of the live-long year to blissful nature. So electronic devices are anathema to me in such situations. I'm glad I won't have cell phone reception. I'm glad I won't hear news of the outside world, or have the internet. I'm not going to go all Amish on you, but I will look askance at anyone who turns on a tv in the cabin. I understand wii, and it's fun, and games are cool in a cabin. But i'll be sticking to hangman and twister .... and, 'natch, spin the bottle. ![]() |

If you're sleeping in a structure that has its own modern plumbing then I say it doesn't really matter any more whether you watch TV or play video games. You're no more "in the woods" than if you were staying at the Best Western just outside the park entrance.
Just my (irrelevant since I won't be there) curmudgeonly view. |

Except it seems to me that's like saying as long as I'm in my hotel room across the Seine from the Louvre, I'm no more in Paris than if I were staying in Berlin.

I suppose it would be, but that's not what I'm saying.
I'm saying that if you're in a hotel in Paris across the from the Louvre I don't think that would create any barriers to watching TV either. Or playing Wii if it were in the room. I agree that watching TV while camping is contradictory because there is a point to camping that TV conflicts with (in my opinion). That same contradiction doesn't exist when you are essentially staying in a hotel, no matter how close it is to the woods. But then I consider air mattresses to be contradictory to the purpose of going camping so what the heck do I know. It just seems to me that drawing the line at Wii is a weird place to draw a line once you're already staying in a fully modern house with a dozen other people. Once it's dark out it won't be much functionality different than if you were all at a party in Irvine. |

The difference is it's a house purposely in the middle of nowhere. I wouldn't be there at all if it were a house in the middle of Irvine.
That said, I won't make any kind of fuss over wii, and will likely take a turn or two myself. The wii is electronic, but it doesn't bring in the outside world. Turn on the television, and I would have a problem. But since the same device is used in each instance, my personal line is wiggly. But there's modern and then there's modern. It might seem like pretend roughing it to go without computers, smart phones and video games ... and just make do with early 20th century rustic stuff like indoor plumbing and kitchens. I'm fine with "theme" if I don't have the real thing. . |

If Irvine LoTers were throwing a big party you wouldn't go? Now you've hurt their feelings.
Anyway, it is all good. Just realized the short way of saying what I meant (but why say it quickly if I can say it with 5400 words): Go ahead an play Wii, it isn't like you're camping. |

I might, I'd just rather play naked twister.
If I were grabbing a snack in my Paris hotel room, I'd still rather eat quiche than a hot dog. So at the cabin in the words, I want to play board games at night. It's just to apply the ambience to all aspects. |

Hey, it's an imrpovement.
I'm not saying "stupid people, why go to Yosemite if you aren't going to sleep naked in the dirt and be awoken by bears tearing you apart in search of the bologna slice you accidentally fell asleep on." And iSm isn't saying "bah! the whole thing is ruined and a waste of time because we aren't staying in the third house from the left that has the perfect view of the second tallest tree which is spiritually the most important one and if you can't see it within forty seconds of awakening then why the hell even bother going! Dibs on the upper bunk!" Debating why exactly it is ok to play Wii seems like a softening of temperaments. |
