I have to say, even without an Atmos theater near me for the moment, I'm still excited to see the theater industry fighting back against falling ticket sales by upping their game.
Atmos, higher frame rates, better food, better seats, this is the way to get me into the theater more often.

How much is going to be charged extra for Atmos Sound? AMC, for example, is charging more for any theaters with decent sound systems. Sorry, but that's most certainly not the way to get me into the theaters more often.
Seems to me the way theaters are battling falling attendance is with gimmicks they use as excuses to charge higher ticket prices. Good luck with that. |

AMC Van Ness is not one of my favorite venues, but I will do it!
I love the building it's in, though

I am not that old but I remember when going to the theater was a million times worse....every seat involved staring upward and dodging tall people, audibly sticky floors, seats that squealed loud enough for most of the theater to hear with the tiniest shifting of weight, picture quality involving stuck hairs and dancing dust, barely stereo sound unless you were seeing some huge blockbuster, none of this an exaggeration...and yet the movies were a treat and a weekly aspiration. Only the popcorn was better, because they were still using that super-high fat coconut grease that no one knew about yet.
I still appreciate stadium seating, cup holders, movable armrests. I still wish I were at the movies every week, even though right now, if I have to pay a sitter, it will cost the two of us at least $50 to see a regular movie. Not including the not-as-good-as-it-used-to-be popcorn. [/CPcurmudgeon]

Since I see lots of art house movies in the theater I still see plenty of stuff in crappy venues.
But even in good venues I've never yet said "what I need is more sound." I'm sure I won't have a problem with Atmos but I doubt I'd ever pay extra (if it is optional) to get it. And if stadium seating hadn't been invented we wouldn't be able to see every single cell phone that is opened during the movie. |

I generally agree with The Oatmeal, but as someone who is in a movie theater 2-3 times a week this could not be further from the truth:
"...older people are always quiet and respectful during a movie..." If given a choice and wanting to play the odds on silence during the movie I'll take a couple of teenagers obviously on their fourth date over an elderly couple or, god forbid, a trio of septuagenarian women. |
