Saying that Green Day is "as punk as Mel Torme" is akin to saying that Green Day is not at all punk. And it's not particularly a statement of opinion-- "punk" is The Sex Pistols. Patti Smith. The Ramones.

By the way, one does not need to live in a cave to avoid whatever talentless hack band the studios are foisting upon the unsuspecting (and not yet discerning) target demographic.

One amasses a collection of actually interesting music and one puts it on one's iPod. One might also limit all radio settings to KCRW or other worthy NPR stations.

Mel Torme - a poor man's Sinatra, an older Tom Jones. He's a lounge crooner.

I know who Sinatra is..but Tom Jones?

And didn't Sinatra sing The Christmas Song?

You do realize that, when you were the target demographic for the studios, people were saying the same thing? I appreciate classic music, but I also enjoy listening to current music as well. There are quite a few current bands out there who play interesting music that isn't crap.

I know who Green Day is. They're the band people call punk but they're not. The people quoted below should know.

"Don't try and tell me Green Day are punk. They're not, they're plonk and they're bandwagoning on something they didn't come up with themselves. I think they are phony."

"So there we are fending off all that and it [really annoys me] that years later a [terrible] outfit like Green Day hop in and nick all that and attach it to themselves. They didn't earn their wings to do that and if they were true punk they wouldn't look anything like they do."

Steve Diggle of the Buzzcocks commented on the band after meeting them:[32]
"I didn't have a clue who they were. And they're not punks."

There are plenty of current bands out there that play interesting music. They just don't seem to get played on commercial radio very often.

I also realize that I was/am part of the target demographic for my age, but they seem to have a difficult time hitting this target.
