My mom was Vegan for years. Then she became allergic to beans, including soy beans. The Dr told her she would die if she didn't get protein from somewhere, and meat was one of the places she had to go. Even with some nuts she was getting pretty sick. There are essintial amino acids that only meat provides.

I liked the In N Out Burger bumper stickers when people altered them to

In N Out Urge that gave me a craving also!

The only thing you can get from meat that you can't get from veggies is B12.

MF- Since August. A little sick. I got pretty light headed, oddly. Then a bit nauseous. But nothing like the time I took a bit of something that I didn't know contained bacon. I don't plan on repeating the experience anytime soon. I'll still eat like a vegan.

Traci already stated that this is incorrect, but I'll go one further. If your mom was willing to take her amino acids in capsule form, she could certainly have remained vegan. As so amusingly referenced above, Tom can only get his amino acids that way.

By the way, Trac, it's OK to be flexible. I eat a little ham around the holidays sometimes. Just because you choose to eat one way most of the time, it doesn't mean you aren't allowed to make other choices.

Sorry, I missed that.

And I was mistaken also. Essential Amino Acids are ones that the human body cannot make, and all of these can be obtained from plants. My bad. Essential Amino Acids

The one thing we cannot get from plants that is in meat is cholesterol.

Nope. Plenty, plenty of vegan foods raise HDL and LDL. You can raise LDL by eating popcorn cooked in coconut oil (i.e. movie theater popcorn), or chocolate, anything hydrogenated or deep-fried. You can raise your HDL by eating good oils, most of which are vegetable-based.

Like Traci said, it's really just the B12 that's missing from a vegan diet. And most vegans I know take multivitamins with B12 in it.

Oh wow, Traci, I didn't realize the significance of you having a burger! Good choice though!

Well, I've never been to an in N out, though there are a few of them in the Bay Area. I seem to recall a long thread about them on mice chat. I guess I should seek one out next time I'm in the mood for a burger. But, we've got a local drive in spot here that has a good reputation (little dive in Belmont) so I may try that first.

I'm putting this in bold because... You know you can order your fries extra crispy, right?

The beauty, IMO, of In N' Out is that they'll make you whatever you want, however you want it, if they have the ingredients. Want cheese fries? Comin' right up! Want 100 patties - well, you know, they've done that, too. (Legend has it they've done more patties than that... But you get the idea.)

If your fries didn't come the way you like them, unless you have something against fresh-cut potatoes - which I know some people do - just ask for a crispier version of the fries.

Unless you're trying to keep away from fast foods. Now-a-days, though I like their fries, if I am simply craving a burger and I am near an In N Out, I don't order the fries - may as well save the calories. The act of me getting fast food in burger-form is fairly rare as well. Fries, under any circumstance are just unnecessary. Unless they're amazing. Put a plate of garlic fries in front of me, and that's amazing.
