I believe you can set up your smart playlists to be random or not, so I would go that route to shuffle and use your ordinary playlists to remain static

I figured out how to set my iPod to shuffle mode and then forgot to turn it back when I wanted to listen to my favorite driving to work CD. This was serious because I've listened to this particular CD so much that I know what song will play on which stretch of PCH and I look forward to Bolsa Chica and the Huntington Beach pier. And when it's on shuffle nothing is certain.
