Another successful movie night. Smaller crowd than usual - six people made for a cozy gathering. We decided early on to postpone Wild At Heart for a later date - perhaps for a Lynch marathon or a double feature with The Wizard of Oz. We snacked, chatted, used the word "mélange" quite a bit, and watched some trailers and musical bits (Amy Winehouse and a subtitled(!) "Strawberry Chips") before the feature.
I'll leave it for the others to describe Perdita Durango, I'll just say that fans of Javier Bardem in No Country should see him in this. At about midnight, I decided to watch Atonement - it was the last Best Picture nominee for me to see (btw, it's out already on DVD in the UK - get it now at Amoeba - or not), but that's for a different thread. At the moment, it looks like the next movie night will be on March 8 - watch this thread for details.

Perdita Durango was quite a mélange of action, spiked wit and even pop culture references. I dreamt of Javier Bardem all night, varying between his two ridiculous psycho-killer haircuts. Comparisons between Perdita and No Country can't be avoided; Tom pointed out, on the way home, that No Country seems a bit like he's playing an older, more grounded version of his Perdita character - and I quite agree.

The movie also drives home the important lesson - Look both ways before crossing the street.

HI!
|
I didn't dream of being hit by a car or run over by a truck.
Good film. Gruesome and gritty and sexy all at the same time. Javier is wonderful - even with one of the most ridiculous haircuts ever. He actually "owned" the hair early on. I'm glad we saw the complete version. I can't imagine this film making sense with the bad edits. |

This Saturday, March 8, we'll be watching two rarely-seen new wave (as in the 80s music, not the cinema genre) classics. Two American flicks... both about a couple of girls who want to make it big as punk rock stars.
First up is Times Square (1980), starring Trini Alvarado and Robin Johnson, with the great Tim Curry playing DJ Johnny LaGuardia. It features an incredible soundtrack, including a duet between Robin Johnson and NY Dolls star David Johansen. Our second feature is Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains (1982), starring Diane Lane and Laura Dern. It also has great cameos by Fee Waybill & Vince Welnick of The Tubes, as well as Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols and Paul Simonon from the Clash (Steve, Paul and Paul play in a band fronted by the actor who would play Beowulf in last year's animated epic). One caveat: the copy I have of The Fabulous Stains is from a rare television broadcast. I expect to have a better quality version by the weekend, but should it not be the case, I might replace it with Breaking Glass (1980) or Starstruck (1982). Same time as always. Snacks and sodas will be waiting. (This weekend will be the only Movie Night for the month of March - we'll resume after the Easter/Spring Break)
