These ten aren't much like each other at all, and they are all discs I actually like, but this shouldn't be mistaken for a top ten list.
The Residents - Eskimo (Eskimo stories told in sound) Anna Russell Sings? - (comedy, featuring a terrific 'analysis' of Wagner's ring) Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica (four sides of primitivist avant-garde fun) Live at CBGB's - (live compilation with The Shirts, Mink deVille, Tuff Darts, Manster) Solomon Burke - Don't Give Up On Me (soulful R&B with new songs by Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, etc.) Thomas Schippers conducts the music of Samuel Barber (a desert island choice - Barber's compositions go beyond the well-known Adagio, and this is the best conductor for his work) Ute Lemper sings Kurt Weill (There are two volumes but the first is the best) Popol Vuh - Music from the films of Werner Herzog (these guys are pretty much their own genre, though usually placed in the New Age category) Yello - Stella (Ooooh Yeah!) Slim Gaillard - Laughing In Rhythm (sly, hip and funny jazzman with his own lingo, "vout") |

OK, just 'cause I'm lazy, I'm going to limit this to cd box sets that I can see from my desk:
- The Instant Monty Python Collection - Star Wars: The Original Soundtrack Anthology - Elvis Presley - Walk A Mile in My Shoes: The Essential 70's Masters - The Buck Owens Collection 1959-1990 - The Music Of Disney - A Legacy of Song - The Look of Love: The Burt Bacharach Collection - Brigitte Bardot - Initiales B.B. - Songs From the Steet - 35 Years of Music - The Ultimate Sesame Street Music Collection - The Complete Charlie Parker on Verve - Diamanda Galas - Masque of the Red Death trilogy ...

1) Amadeus: Original Soundtrack Recording -- used to fall asleep to this every night.
2) Queen: Greatest Hits -- an old vinyl version. Argueably in a class by themselves. 3) Georgia Satellites: Georgia Satellites -- also on vinyl. Good ol' southern rock. 4) The Album of the Soundtrack of the Trailer of the Film of Monty Python and the Holy Grail -- again, vinyl. Defies description. 5) The Beatles: White Album. Again, solo class. Rocky Raccon, baby. 6) The Posies: Dear 23 -- homegrown happy/angst pop. 7) Queensryche: Operation:Mindcrime -- more homegrown -- operatic metal. 8) Lee Press-on and the Nails: El Bando en Fuego -- wacky latin-flavored swing from kinky goth types. One of the few albums both of us like. 9) Yo-Yo Ma and Bobby McFerrin: Hush -- Another of the few we both like. 10) Manhattan Transfer: The Manhattan Transfer Anthology: Down in Birdland -- yup, me too. Plus I can sing the tenor parts to both "Ray's Rockhouse" and "That Cat is High." 11) Depeche Mode: Songs of Faith and Devotion -- In college this was the CD of choice for my, um, private time. 12) Red Elvises: I Wanna See You Bellydance -- Russian-flavored rockabilly. 13) They Might Be Giants: Flood -- happy happy happy! 14) Hedwig and the Angry Inch: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack -- no way this overlaps Mozart. Well, there are the wigs. 15) Ramones: Mania -- yeah!

Ok - this has really been a challenge for Not Afraid and me since we have rather ecclectic tastes in music - so we decided to combine our lists and come up with 20. Well, then we had some more - so those are for the cats:
