Sounds like it's Babe Herman appreciation day in New York. Let's go, Mets.

I don't want to start a thread. But go A's!

I have tickets for Friday's Game 3 so that should be a pretty good atmosphere for attending a game.

Based on past history, it's time to start thinking how the Twins match up against the Yankees.

Hmm, I wonder if Moonie's referring to the decission to start the reserve players and give the vets/every day players a rest, even though the title for the NL West was still technically on the line.

Personally, I think Little made the right decission, and that's not just hindsight, I was hoping for that decission the minute they won on Saturday.

They had wrapped up a trip to the post season. That's all that really matters at this point. Sure, the title would be nice, but look at the situation. They'd play the Cards instead of the Mets. Eh, six of one, half dozen of the other, they're both very strong teams (plus, teams with run-away regular seasons tend not to fair well in post season play). Meanwhile, even winning on Sunday (which they did) didn't guarantee them anything since SD had to also lose.

So, with the outcome not even entirely in their hands, and a best-case-if-the-stars-line-up-right scenario that's only incrementally better than the worst case, an extra day of rest for some pretty well banged up regulars, plus a chance to get the bench one last live-game warmup seems a fair trade to me.

The way I see it, if SD had lost on Saturday, making the division the Dodgers' to lose, then I (as delusional manager of the Dodgers) would have sent the regulars out there on Sunday since it would then be squarely in their hands. Otherwise, if you've gotta hope for something beyond your control, not worth it with a playoff berth already wrapped up.

I would have liked to see them go for the title rather than back off.

I suppose it has something to do with Pedro Martínez but I still don't like it.

I won't say it's wrong, but I'll stick by "questionable"

In any case I'm still behind them to go all the way this year.

When winnnig doesn't even guarantee the title, it's not worth the risk. No sense gambling on something out of your team's control.

And heck, they did win. Imagine what a boost it would have been had their bench players sealed the title. There was way more upside to giving the starters the rest than making Nomar hobble out there for a game that's only semi-meaninful.

They should have just looked at the wider picture said "crap, the best National League team is only a middling American League team" and then converted into a AAA team to avoid eventual embarrassment.

Speaking of Nomar, is it just me or does a dude with 2 bad legs hitting a couple of walk-off homeruns sound like fate?

Of course, I wish he didn't feel the need to one-up Gibson. "Alright Kirk, I'll see your 2 bum legs and raise you a strained oblique."

Hell, one game down. When I saw that Nomar was up with a chance to tie it or take the lead, I ran to my car to catch Vin's call, only to be disappointed.

The good news is, they hung in there. Take out one bizarre baserunning error (I gotta see the replays and see if the 3rd base coach sent Kent in. Is it still Hoffman?) and you've got a whole different ballgame. Plus, the Dodgers didn't need to go as deep into their bullpen as the Mets, that bodes well for the series going forward.

They just need to cut out a few of those K's (13 strikeouts, ouch!), keep wearing their pitchers down, and keep manufacturing runs. A frustrating loss, but there are worse ways to lose, especially game 1 on the road.
