Ally i know and understand. It was like holy **** last nite when the earthquake hit. I sleep horribly thanks to my work schedule (working late afternoons evenings). So i have been extra tired. Last's night shake was totally crappy. Seriously. Living near the epicenter and all the shaking. I seriously thought it was the "big one". Luckily no damage other than the cookie jar. But still it totally shakes me up When i was living alone in the stuido apartment i had a situation late at night that freaked me out to the point of not being able to sleep at night for the longest time nor alone without tv radio any kind of noise.

Luckily there weren't any cookies in the jar at the time. But still now i have to replace the jar with another jar and there ain't no more Pepe Le Pew ones unless i go on ebay...
Just it's just a nuisance earthquakes are and to be rattled out of a deep sleep to have to clean up and take count of animals is just a bother. Hey it made national news. |

I'm with Coaster, Monkeygirl & Morri. Especially since I'm right next door to Northridge.
Let me just sum it up, y'all... THEY ARE THE SUCKIEST THINGS TO EVER SUCK I am terrified of them. We're talkin' total panic attack, cannot breathe, feet don't even touch the floor as I run screaming into the night over them. In the past, I've always known what to do in the event of one. I keep my head on straight, focus and act accordingly. I usually ride them out standing under a doorway. And then along came the Northridge quake. I changed completely as a person. My anxiety levels soared into full blown panic disorder. I have no idea how to conduct myself now. ![]() Last night's quake woke me up (I actually have to take sedatives due to poor sleep caused by anxiety, but I rarely do.) So, as the earth started shaking, I FREAKED & bolted. I'm even more scared now living in a two story house. The funny thing is, I moved into my Grandma's house (the house I grew up in) after my Grandpa passed away. I told her I'd live with her until the house finally sold. I decided that even though she doesn't look or act her age, it might be very helpful to keep an eye over her. However, she was as cool as a cucumber last night. I flew into her bedroom and clung to her (she's a total night owl who turns in at 2 a.m. I'm in bed by 10 p.m. ). She had to practically crowbar me off of her! She invited me to stay with her in her bedroom and I crawled in bed with her for an hour until I settled down, prayed, and then I returned to my room. My boyfriend, who is in Valencia, felt it, too, and stayed on the phone with me for about an hour. He knows I'm terrified of my own shadow. It's nice to know that Grandma can count on me during emergencies. ![]() My lights and TV stayed on all night. I was UP ALL NIGHT UNTIL WORK, only sleeping a few minutes here & there. I force my self to stay awake, like my being up will you know, help me to have more control over the earth's crust. ![]() I'm punchy & worthless in my office today, due to severe FCS (fraidy cat sydrome). We only had one collectable figurine fly off the bookcase. You can haw haw all you want, and believe me I know I'm a total wussy, but if you went through Northridge, you might understand it just a little bit more! |

I understand earthquake anxiety. I'm a *very* level-headed girl most of the time (though you can't put beer cans on my head), and after Northridge I had to have sedatives for a bit. I can only imagine how it would be for a normal girl.

Oh, I'm glad that you girlies can relate!! (Not that I wish that we had to endure the anxiety caused by them!)
![]() I've always been panic-prone, but I developed full blown panic disorder after the Northridge quake, and have suffered with it ever since. I rarely ever touch my anxiety pills (Ativan, or Lorazepam) because they cause me to slow down too much and make me hazy. Every night before I go to sleep, I lay in bed and think "what if one hits....NOW!" Then, I freeze, gasp, and repeat the process until I distract myself and fall asleep. I cannot fall asleep without my television on. I keep it on a sleep timer. It's an awful way to live. My quality of life...just hasn't been quite the same due to my overwhelming fears. While any noise at night causes my heart to sink and causes me to brace myself, a quake is much different for me. My house is in a somehwhat dark & hilly area. Creepy at night! Especially when I hear them hills rustle at night. Oofah. However, if I hear a noise in the house, I'll pop up, flip on my bedside lamp and maybe, only once in a blue moon, grab my gun (which, I have to be honest, I don't even like touching. My Dad, who is a deputy, insists that we all own one. I've fired one, I understand one, but I don't like 'em). I need to be alarmed enough to grab it. When a quake hits, I lose all common sense. I run like a deranged lunatic, arms flailing & screaming for loved ones. And definitely no gun. Shooting at the ground won't change a thing. How lame and frightening would that be? "Stop shaking you bastard!" as I shoot right through the floor onto the first story. ![]() |

Heehee! Oh, I don't think it'll work. I'm sure after all the shaking is done, and I'm left with a floor full of smoking holes, terrified neighbors and destroyed furniture and belongings, I'll wish that I had just rode it out rather then, you know, "teach them shiftin' plates in the earth a lesson!"
Next stop: Shootin' them thunder clouds. ![]() Alphabassettgrrl: lotsa **hugs**, too! ![]() |
