Battling the interwebs... this is serious business, so I've got ANOTHER bottle of carbonated beverage handy.

I did get it in CA. The cop said he thinks I can do traffic school in Arizona. Whoopee! I'm so thrilled to be able to lose five hours of my life to the most boring thing on the planet. If there is online traffic school, I will be so happy. He cited me as 85 in a 70, even though he made a point to tell me that he could be giving me four or five tickets (reckless driving, endangerment, etc.). He said he took my speeding personally. He must get his feelings hurt a lot.

The coyote problem in the area I work is is getting progressively worse. I'm now working in triage mode to make sure all of my clients know about the situation. There have been a LOT of attacks.

Oh no! I feel so bad for coyotes because their homes are being built in and they're running out of food. I love coyotes, but they'll steal your dogs right off a leash!

It's 8 hours here. You're very lucky he wrote it for less. I think our traffic school instructor said the fines for those speeds and all the other fines that come with it are close to $1k.

Well, there hasn't been any major new construction in the affected (and surrounding) area since about 1965. There have always been coyotes that roam the LA river bed and live in the open spaces on Long Beach (LB has some of largest areas of open land of any major metropolitan area). Cal State Lone Beach has had a coyote problem for many years - and they feed of of the cats that students bring into the dorms then leave to fend for themselves when they leave school.

It seems the local pack had a split and one female was ousted. She looked for a new hunting area and found paradise in the manicured lawns of North Long Beach. It seems she has attracted a boyfriend and started a family. And they are HUNGRY and AGGRESSIVE. She came within 10 feet of clients were were walking their Chi-mix and didn't want to back down. Two people, one small dog and one hungry coyote - not a good situation. My clients prevailed but it was a scary moment. There have been lots of cats/rabbits/chickens/small dogs killed recently. The problem has just been escalating.

There is a NO RELOCATION policy within the City of Long Beach and they won't do anything unless something really terrible happens (ie: a child get injured).

It's a tough situation. I walk MANY small dogs in the area (including Thurston) and they have to be walked. It's not a good situation.

Lisa carry pepper spray and consider a tazer! I'd actually look into a cattle prod to give you more of a range/reach in a proactive protective mode.

Obviously, anytime a coyote is aggressive enough to come after someone there is a very high likelihood of rabies. By nature, they are shy and reclusive- even hunger isn't usually enough to force them to attack unless the prey is smaller and there are no humans around. I'd be very careful, and definitely invest in some spray. Pure ammonia will work as well.

I do have pepper spray - I just don't always carry it, but I will now. I also will get some sort of noise maker to carry with me.

Maybe one of those large clown horns will do. I can put on excessive make-up and become the Clown Dog Walker!
