When looking for a house, I would want fairly new cabinets, counters, plumbing, flooring and windows. Why? Because those things would require major overhauls that I don't want to deal with when moving. Now, painted walls, wall trims, etc. I don't really care about, because that stuff can be fixed in a weekend without really any effort. To me, it says the owner actually gave a crap about their home and is not just trying to dump their well-used crap. Those things don't have to be the top-of-the-line expensive items, but they should be newer than 10 years at the oldest, even if it's just new linoleum flooring.

In other subjects, I wish I hadn't gone to the interview yesterday, because sure enough - after sitting through their "process" for nearly two hours, they told me the position was recently filled. To make matters worse, they don't validate parking, so I ended up paying $15, besides all the gas to get there.

On a good note though, I spent the rest of the day at a nearby friend's house and checked my email to find a response for another position that I applied for, asking me for references and that they'll call me to set up an interview, because they really like my samples and resume. It's an awesome position too - lots of editing involved!

They deliberately wasted your time? That's not cool.

If that's the company I think it is, they have a reputation for doing just that.

Many temp agencies put out non-existent jobs to lure people in. After putting them through the testing they say the job has been filled. Then they call to get you to take jobs you're not interested in.

I had a placement from an agency that was terrible. I was supposed to be working on some data entry stuff (according to the agency). When I got there the job was to stuff envelopes in the basement mail room. Sadly (or not) I have a good work ethic and stuck through the day. I called the agency to tell them and they said that was the position they told me about. Uh, ok. I told them I didn't want to go back to that company. They called me 3 more times to go back and do that "same job". I finally told them I had gotten full time work elsewhere.

I've had mixed results from Agencies. I got the last two jobs I've had through agencies with no issues. Years ago an agency sent me for an interview for a job at CAA. The job consisted of literally sitting in a room all day and typing in contracts. The agency told them I typed 70 wpm. Uh no - maybe 45ish on a good day. I immediatley told the lady who was interviewing me - she was totally pissed, not at me but the agency. If it was something I could have maybe picked up or something I may have fudged it but the job was just typing all day long they would have quickly figured it out.

I landed a pretty good gig through a different agency. They needed someone to do very heavy filing and some very light data entry work. It paid well and it was a 2 month job. I took it, finished the filing within a week. They had an opening for a M-F 40 hour summer job posted on Monster doing the same thing with more responsibilities and the manager said if I applied through there it was mine, but the position wasn't approved through to be listed through agency. So I applied on a Thursday, they had me come in on Friday for some data entry work, "interviewed" me and hired me for the summer job, starting Monday. I walk in on Monday and they said they let the other guy (permanent employee) go and offered the permanent position with more money and benefits.
