The elementary school I went to didn't offer busing at all. Everybody walked except for a few cases of getting dropped off by parents. From second grade on I did the walk and I did it by myself. The intersections immediately adjacent to the school had crossing guards (a cadre consisting of volunteers from the 5th and 6th grade).

Worked fine and hardly anybody got raped, murdered, run over, or kidnapped by aliens.

So I like the walking but I find the need for constant adult supervision to be silly.

Sooooo....

Haven't seen this username for a while, have you?

I just wanted to explain my absence.

Two weeks ago, I slipped on the wet concrete in my garage and broke my knee (lateral tibia plateau fracture) and just had surgery this last Thursday to correct it.

You old folks will understand... Kids slip, they fall. Adults just can't do that; they have to flail around trying everything they can to keep from falling. Well, in all that flailing around, my knee bent to the inside instead of to the front, effectively snapping off the top of my tibia.

Doc says he's pleased with the reconstruction, but I'm to put NO weight on my leg for the next 6 weeks. I'm back home now, but as you can imagine, I'm not up to 100% yet so online time will still be curtailed for the forseeable future.

I'm not gone... just hobbled.

My advice for anyone finding themselves in a similar situation...

1. Just fall... all that scrambling around you're prone to do when you feel yourself falling is just likely to injure you more.

2. Call an ambulance... they're not just for heart attack or stroke victims. If I'd called one, I would already be 2 weeks into the healing process, not just beginning it.

Now, with that public service announcement out of the way, I've got some 1900 messages to catch up on. Wish me luck

PS... If anyone is acquainted with the chemist who first formulated Lorcet, give them a big wet kiss in the mouth for me. He/she may look at you funny, but I'll feel better.

It's good to be back. I've missed you all.

I see lots of kids walking to school everyday. We live in a fairly small town though.

What angers me is they took the crossing gaurds away last year. I don't think K-6 should all be crossing busy streets on their own. Not to say the 6th graders aren't more than capable but the kindergarteners are not.

If the kids need adult supervision to walk then I'm ok with that, it may seem silly, but in this day and age you hear a lot of awful stories. So I guess better safe than sorry.

It's now "Abbey's" -- same place, same menu, new and exciting name. This is the Palo Alto location -- I believe the San Mateo and Santa Clara locations are still Taxi's.

The one in Dublin was still a Taxi's as of yesterday (assuming this is the same place).
