The difference is that your family's story is completely plausible - even if one cannot prove or disprove it. The story about the sourdough (a term, btw, that was not coined until the 1850's) instantly set off my BS alarm; as it was obviously impossible and easy to disprove.

Charming family stories are one thing, outrageous claims trying to prove something of yours is better than someone else's is another.

I made no outrageous claims, it is a family story of how the starter came into our family and oral history is sometimes flawed now bug off.

And, that is right. I think that, perhaps, if there was some issue with the date, it should have maybe came out/been questioned differently, as I know that Promo Man as not trying to make outlandish claims and snowball us all.

Being the internet sometimes things don't come out just right.....

I think the sample should be analyzed in a laboratory to see if it is actually sourdough starter or some kind of imitation.

(I get some when I get down there, right? Because I was just having a conversation last weekend that involved me wanting to get some sourdough starter.)
