I was surprised.

Did he have some illness I was unaware of? (I don't follow celebrity news.) or was it just his hard living that eventually did him in?

I think SL is referring to the two main men in the series "Maude"

Bill Macy (not to be confused with William H. Macy) who played Maude's husband is still alive.
Conrad Bain who played the next door neighbor (and probably a little better know for playing Philip Drummond (the father) on Diff'rent Strokes) is still alive

And yes, Bea Arthur died last year.

Apparently there's an episode of Golden Girls where they're all talking about getting old and retirement homes and they agree to all go to one together. Then at the end Betty White asks "but what about when there's just one of us left?"

Now that's good TV writing.
