Well - I'm looking at it and it looks the same. But what would be the tale-tail sign of infection?

If it looks fine, and it not red, swollen, puffy or retaining (or oozing) fluids, it is probably ok

Also if kitty stops eating, or feels warm. But from what you have said, that seems quite unlikely. Cats damaging thier tails is very common, and the cat seems to adjust just fine from what I've seen.
