For the most part I think United 93 deserves the acclaim it is getting. But it is hard for me to go along with it as a great original screenplay.
In fact of the three original screenplay nominations I've seen, none are what I'd consider great because of the screenplay. United 93 is in how it was filmed, Little Miss Sunshine and The Queen in how they were acted. They weren't hampered by bad screenplays but they weren't elevated either. |

Oh, I think the screenplay for The Queen was essential to its success. Ditto for Little Miss Sunshine. The films were each wonderfully acted, but it's not like they were improvised.

Yes, they were fine screenplays, but I don't think they were great screenplays. Odds are that if anybody other than Helen Mirren played that part, the movie would only be half so good.
Same with LMS, though maybe not so much. But then I didn't really like The Queen, so my opinion is flawed anyway. |
