One of the regulars at the Casa de Mousepod screenings has never seen any David Lynch movie (one of my favorite directors).
We talked about the different options for introducing her to Lynch: Eraserhead (his first), Blue Velvet (his breakthrough), even the Pilot episode of "Twin Peaks". But last month, when I finally saw Maya Deren's "Meshes of the Afternoon", and found out how much she loves it, I decided to go with Lost Highway. The problem is, Lost Highway is a movie that Mrs. Mousepod doesn't want to revisit anytime soon. So yesterday, with the Mrs. out of town on a mission for the Mouse, we decided to have an impromptu screening of the movie (with H's blessing, of course). Alas, by the time we got the Twitter invite out, nobody else could make it. Undaunted, we decided to watch it anyway... but by the time we both finished our household duties, it was after 9 pm, too late to start the 2 hour+ movie. So it's tonight. 7:30 pm. We're going to watch the 15 minute Maya Deren film first, with Lost Highway starting no later than 8pm.

Hmmm, I'm seriously considering it. If you start at 8 as opposed to 7:30, I'll be more inclined. (Getting from West L.A. to Silverlake on a weeknight is not pretty. Hmm, I suspect the guest of honor might have some travel tips on that route.)

I just don't want to start the feature too late - it's 135 minutes long...

Sorry i missed. I had to work late, then run an errand taking me even further west in the wrong direction. Never would have made it on time.

It was really very terrifying. I enjoyed it (and was duly freaked out.)

Oooh - Lost Highway - creepy, beautiful, fascinating movie. I've only seen it once, but it has stuck with me something powerful.
I got the Eraserhead DVD last year and rewatched it for the first time in about 25 years. (Back in High School, I listed it as my favorite movie in various yearbook lists and school paper end of year lists. I was half kidding.) Anyway, I was surprised to find that Eraserhead is really funny. It's dark and disturbing, sure, but, gosh, I kept finding myself laughing and smiling. I want an actual director's cut of Dune. I don't think it's ever going to happen, though. |
