Spam followers are a primary reason that I protect my updates. Kind of a pain when I want to participate in something like #rejectprop8 and have to temporarily unblock them, but worth it in terms of not constantly getting spam followers.

I use hashtags even though I remain locked. I hope that these tweets are counted towards overall numbers for my topics even though they aren't viewable outside my friends.

If not, oh well, fun anyway, and gets others who aren't locked to use them.

If you know some of the history that predated LoT, you too may be amused by the Twitter user "Apple"
