So, con was 1/4 nightmare and 3/4 fun. Too many people and too many things that have nothing to do with comics and that sucks big time.
The train ride down was a pain because someone got hit on the tracks and we had to wait 2 hours in Chatsworth. The hotel - Holiday Inn had a nice view of the bay, though the bus to Con was always packed and always took forever to show up. We had one driver that must've been a racer in his day because he was flying around corners. That was a good ride. The con was 25% comics and the rest was crap. Getting thru and isle where any movie studio or Star Wars was based was impossible. Preview night was a major disaster as thousands of attendies were packed in the walkway in front of the con with no visable lines. The professional registration was hidden behind the attendee crowd and the "line" for Media and no visible signage. Once I found the "line" and got my badge it went smooth but you would think that a sold out convention would have some sort of order. I got a bunch of cool stuf and saw some celebs. Mostly I did the fanboy thing and got to meet some of the "old timers" like Mike Grell, Joe Staton and saw an AMAZING BBC documentary on Spiderman creator - Steve Ditko that was rock solid. In the "Fanboy" catagory I did very well. Professionally, it was hit/miss. Some neat stuff might happen in the next year but we'll see. Had a great time, but really wish this was a comic convention again. It's tragic. I suspect I will go next year but I am considering only a day or two and put my money towards a real comic-con in New York or up north. Saw Ponine, Mousepod, Capt Jack and Lizzy! Capt Jack has a pic that I hope he posts! |

I was reading a story in today's LA Times lamenting how the Con is becoming less about the comics and more about Hollywood. Your post seems to confirm that.

OH! ALso, I got the new Al Jaffee book "Tall Tales" which reprints his newspaper strips from the 50's and 60's. A total LOL throughout. Plus I got it autographed by the man himself. wow!

Whew! We are still recovering, but had a great time this year. It was an unusual con experience for us: we almost never left the table, and we really were not interested in the party scene this year (the Weta/Lucasfilm/Dark Horse/Gentle Giant bash was just awful -- overrun by obnoxious industry 20-somethings with cell phones glued to their hands -- we only stayed about 20 minutes).
Being stuck at the table allowed us to people-watch (the steampunk ghostbusters!) and chat with visitors (Fej, Captain Jack, Ponine, Bornieo, mousepod -- hope I didn't forget anyone) in a pretty relaxed way. We made enough to pay off our credit cards (wooo!), and were able to set up some potential gigs for hubby. It was crazy-crowded, but it can't get any worse now as they've hit the attendance ceiling. We liked being set up near one of the front doors -- I imagine if we'd been back in Artist's Alley we'd have been quite miserable. We had a few small complaints (hubby was not really treated like a GoH, the studios have practically driven comics out of the show, blah, blah, blah) but none of that was a surprise since we've been attending regularly for so many years and pretty much knew what to expect. Only one thing left me nonplussed: those weird, persistent lines for things. "Con exclusives?" Huh? I don't get it. I was hoping one of the Disney folk would start a line to nowhere near them... ![]()

kudos to sketchguy for the shot I cant begin tell you how thrilled I was to meet you guys, let alone how stunned I was to meet the artist for one of the most iconic comic characters in my early life, Captain Stern (theres a whole story behind that, that...well, I just cant go into without, frankly....wayyyy TMI) who knew? ![]() ![]()

One of my favorite local kid's artists - Dan Goodsell, had a "con exclusive" - a plush Mr. Toast Vampire - complete with fangs and cape!
