Time Warner's trying to price people out of analog cable. Analog cable actually costs 5 cents more than digital.

GD, I have Time Warner Cable, and I was under the impression that it was only a $10 monthly fee to have it. Is there more to it, like equipment fees?

And how much is TiVo?

I was considering DVR, and I don't know that I would use many features, just record my favorite shows so I can watch them later.

For 1 regular cable box, it's $5/month on top of the service fees. For the DVR, add another $10/month ($15/month total). We have a second, non-DVT cable box which costs $5/month + a $2.50 digital programming fee.

TiVo's running a deal right now. Pay for 3 years of service up front for the price of 2 ($300). It means needing the money in hand now, but it works out to $8.33 per month. So if we get rid of the TW DVR, go down to 1 cable box, that's $15 + the $2.50 programming fee for the second box, and voila, a net savings of $9.17/month. Of course, there's the cost of the box , so knock a couple bucks off of that savings, but it's still less for a far superior box.

If we hadn't already had a ReplayTV in the past, I'm sure we would have been happy with the TimeWarner DVR. And it's possible that the bugs we're seeing could be solved by a technician coming out. But having lived with a more feature-filled product before, we were used to certain things and it would be nice to have them again, especially at reduced cost.

Thanks GD! That's a pretty heafty sum to put out at once, though.

A friend of mine had the TW DVR, and had to change it out three or four times before he got one that worked right. It would mostly just die and quit working....

We are on the cusp of spending way more money than we should on a new big-assed TV. We may end up buying a top-of-the-line HD, but not have an HD feed. Unfortunately, TiVo's HD unit (which we don't have, but would probably be in our future), doesn't like satellite and that is what we have (Dish).

So, after I finish here, I get to do some research on the units we looked at today (right now, the Mitsubishi 65" Diamond DLP is ahead). Paul's TV may be the source since based on our preliminary looking, he appears to have the best pricing.

Yikes!

I have returned from shopping and the house is now full of a wide range of unusual liquors as I try to recreate some cocktails for New Years. I think there will be plenty left over.
