You know, I really don't care who goes to what conference or buys which computers. I don't care. As either employee or taxpayer, I don't care. I am not trying to imply that you, oh IT director, are somehow under my authority. I'm aware that I have no authority.

All I want is some piece of paper that says who bought what or went where and what budget it should be charged to. This idea that you'll just buy things on your procard and not turn in receipts and not fill in notes online and complain that I'm trying to assign you work because I'd like something to attach to the monthly bill to show what the - literally - tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars have been spent on is, frankly, unworkable. When the auditors come around, I'm the one they'll write up. I'm the one the teevee cameras will beeline for. Because I'm not able to account for these funds.

I know that your purchases were work related. I know you work very hard. I know you have the hardest job in the entire universe and that I can't even contemplate how hard it is because it's beyond the comprehension powers of my little secretary brain. I know that someone as close to worm sh*t as I am in the whole corporate hierarchy can't be expected to understand the complexities of your position that require you to withhold from me an entire year's worth of documentation.

Furthermore, I know that an insignificant dung beetle, such as myself, has no right to know what purchases you intend to make in the next three months. Sure, it's biennium close and some budgets are really close to the line, but that doesn't mean you should have to acknowledge that I exist, let alone share with me such valuable secrets as which conferences you plan to attend before June 30 or how many more computers you plan to purchase for your new IT staff. No, it's much better that you surprise me. That's what I live for - your crumbs of information coming in random drips and drabs; please, let me, the lowly worm, process those meaningless trivia into glorious castings which will fertilize the files of pure invention that support our current budget report.
