Shortly after posting that this morning I had the situation where I was a good 20 feet behind another guy who didn't even know I was there. He opened the door and didn't hold it for me (I had no problem with this). However, this is a badge secured door so I started to do a quick burst to get there before it closed.
The guy heard something looked back, saw me, and then it was a race back to the door since he decided the politeness required he beat me to it so he could hold it open for me. That's was the door holding version of the person who decides to decline right-of-way at a four-way stop. Sure, it seems polite but it just makes everything awkward. |

Is it possible there are different "flavors" of avocado? I'm eating one now that I just got from the store, and while it's ripe and all... the flavor's just.... meh. And the whole fruit is very watery inside. I'm wondering if this is a different strain or something.

And yes, it's occurred to me that I have no idea whether or not anyone else is fluent in my body language, but I try damnit. The door that the insensitive clod from this morning failed to hold for me was a badge door. Slime.

As far as I understand, there are three versions of avocado commonly available; more not commonly so. I second the recommendation to always buy Haas; on the bright side, they're the most common in grocery stores.
As far as holding doors, I hold doors and always say thank you when one is held for me. I see it as a human thing, doesn't matter if the person behind me is male or female. It's kind of funny; I've had guys walk up to the door I've held open for them, and they hold it and want me to walk through. Usually that's at the post office when I'm leaving; has to do with the way the door opens.

Regarding the door - like I said, I don't *expect* someone to hurry up, and in no situation would I expect someone to run or even jog to get there. I just know that when I see someone holding the door, I make a gesture (and by that, I mean slight body language) to suggest that I see them doing something very kind, and I don't dawdle. I'm really talking about people who dawdle unnecessarily. I suppose that I should just hold the door until I realize they're dawdling, then just leave. The one time I did that, I got an "ugh" from the woman as she came through the door and stepped behind me in line. She thought I was rude.
I liken the whole thing to crossing the street. Make your way across at a normal pace if you're not hindered by disability or age. I apply it to everything. Be as least a hindrance as possible. Make the world a better place (even if only slightly, and affecting only a handful of people at best) one tiny act at a time.

I don't know if there's a third one, but I'd still stick with Haas. Always a safe bet.
