So I was wondering, what with the holidays coming up, are those flat rate boxes from the Post Office a good deal?

Short answer: They might save you time, but probably not money.

Flat rate pricing is a greater benefit to those who use the system most and a "rip-off" of those who use it least? I'm shocked by that revelation!

The article has several facts incorrect, but let me point out two main points:

The Flat Rate Envelopes and boxes have no practical weight limit (you can go up to 70 pounds). As they say in their commercials, "If it fits, it ships". I know this for a fact because we mail out several thousand packages a year using Flat Rate Envelopes and every single one of them is over a pound (most are over two pounds).
If you use the Non-Flat-Rate Priority Mail rates, the postage cost is based on weight and zone (distance). If you look here, you will see that all rates (excepting for one) are higher than the flat rate for both the Envelope and Small Box.

Also, you can get the flat rate boxes for free from the USPS.

If you have a one or two pound shipment or a three pound shipment going to Zones 1-6, then the medium Flat Rate Box is not a deal (and you can do your own match for the rest), but overall, Flat Rate can be and usually is a good deal.

Flat rate boxes make selling on eBay much easier. The buyer can't argue the seller inflated the shipping price and the seller can't be cryptic in their shipping method.
