Great big suckage. So I have these on-going issues with my teeth. Long story. Enough built up that at my age, and given my neurotic compulsion to floss multiple times daily, I sought a second opinion. Well, I got the full results of my second opinion. I *just* had a "full" check-up at the old dentist in January, and he filled three cavities but said everything else is wonderful. Results of the second opinion? three more cavities that need immediate attention (including another one in a tooth filled in January -- why wouldn't the old dentist have done both? Even *I* could see it on the xray.)

AND, the last crown I had done only 1 year ago, the one that I've complained hurts and doesn't feel right for a year and been told is all in my head, is actually an incredibly poorly fitted crown. It's so bad that the underlying tooth has been decaying (which was causing the pain and bleeding.) And so now not only do I have to get a new crown (which insurance won't pay for because the old one is only a year old) but FIRST I have to have oral surgery to do something called a "crown lengthening." I have no idea what that is, but it doesn't sound good.

I'm so angry. It's pain and inconvenience for me, and it drains our bank account. And I got suckered into feeling misplaced loyalty and it might cost me teeth. And as snotty as it sounds, having bad teeth makes me feel like I'm some smelly hick who never even looks at a toothbrush. I'm so angry at my (former) dentist. He kept telling me it was my fault and I believed him. Heck, last month he punched me in the arm and it shocked me so much I didn't even know what to do.

I need a freakin' spine already. Grrr.

Prudence, I'm so sorry you're having such a time! I know teeth issues are painful and expensive.

I know bad teeth run in my family. I'm the only one on my moms side to still have my real teeth. Everyone else was below 30 and (knock on wood) I'm headed into...um the next decade!

I hope they can get your crown all fixed up and the pain will end. I'm sure that alone will be a huge relief for you.

Hey Prudence,
I feel your pain. I've avoided the dentist for a couple of years. Last December, I finally found a dentist that I could trust. He laid out the course of action for me: two crowns, two extractions (followed by two painful and expensive implants) and a filling. Last month, I had the two extractions, which included a bone graft (yummy!). Next month, the crowns and filling. Late May, two implants. But after then, my mouth will be perfect. Right? Right?

Ahhh Prudence! I'm feeling for you! Happened to me as well...

Went in thinking I had a little cavity...NOPE you need a root canal. Ok..piece of cake and it really was. Very little pain...I couldn't see what all the fuss was about!

Back two months later..having the same problem on the other side...this time..not just one root canal...TWO. These were soooo painful...I'm scared to go to the dentist now for the first time in my life!

I'm thinking I'll have to see one of those..take the lovely pill..wake up when it's over dentists!

I'm reminding myself about how awesome my bed is... mmmmm... bed....

I guess this might or might not be the time, where I say I work for a dental office. I'm so sorry to hear about what you've gone through, Prudence. No dentist should make you feel that way. Do you live in California, BTW?

Anyhow, I'll probably send you a PM later, and I might bring this up with the doctor I work for.

Re: the root canals. Yeesh! Yeah, the fuss over root canals is the dying of the nerve, not so much the procedure itself. The procedure is basically designed to relieve the pressure of the gasses being built up by the bacteria being attracted by a nerve that's just called it quits, and to clear it out before things get too bad. The first RC you needed to do probably had a nerve that was already dead. The other side probably got caught a little sooner. Even though it was more painful, it is (I think) better to do it before the nerve completely dies, because you don't want to get a bad infection. Yeesh. OK -- done with too much dental information hour.

Back to your regularly scheduled morning.

Dentist, me no likey. I get scared they'll hurt me. Having said that, I have been through braces in the 80's, so I should be able to face up to anything !
