Does anyone have any experience with DVD-A (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD-Audio)?
Is it really better than a CD (or loss-less iTune track) on a good stereo setup?

I'm thinking of a completely different DVDA (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0124819/quotes?qt0309387).
Although apparently Matt and Trey's band is named DVDA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVDA_%28band%29).

DVD-Audio is ABSOLUTELY stunning on a good setup, next time you're in town, come over and hear some tracks.
The Eagles' Hotel California DVD-Audio and Metallica's Black Album DVD-Audio are two discs that I ALWAYS use to show off "Mephisto" (Yes, my sound system has a name- deal with it).

I'll take you up on that some day!
I'm finally getting around to building my man-cave and I'm looking at all the audio/video formats I want to support. I guess DVD-A and/or SACD will have to make the list.
I especially liked the review I read about the DVD-A disk of the 1812 Overture blowing out lesser speakers on the cannons. :)
My goals are simple, 1080p at 110" in 2.35:1 or 16:9 format.
Surround sound 7.1 running DTS-MA 24bit
In short, a system to give that cat permanent hearing loss and me a better than average chance of getting served divorce papers....

Emotiva.com - great gear at great prices.
Pick up a UMC-1 pre/processor for $699, an XPA-5 and XPA-2 amps to drive all 7 channels FANTASTICALLY, a trio of ERM 6.3 speakers for the front, and 4 ERD-1 speakers for the side and rear surround.
Connect with appropriate cables, hook up an Oppo BDP-83 for excellent Bluray/DVD/DVD-Audio/SACD playpack
You're on your own for the screen :D

Excellent, I see you did not buy into that "center" speaker bunk. Give me three three matching speakers or give me death!
I was planning on using the PS3-Slim for my Blu-ray needs since it can now bitstream DTS-MA, but I am rethinking that since I'd like to have DVD-A, SACD capability.
Receiver wise, I'm looking at the Denon 4311ci (~130 watts/channel)
For speakers I like the Axiom M80's (http://www.axiomaudio.com/m80.html) for fronts and center. QS8's (http://www.axiomaudio.com/qs8.html) for the Surrounds and of course a subwoofer (http://www.axiomaudio.com/ep500.html)
The screen will be a Center Stage from Seymour AV (http://www.seymourav.com/). Acoustically Transparent with masking panels to covert my 110" 16:9 screen into a 110" 2.35:1 screen as needed.
A Panasonic PT-AE4000 projector (http://www.projectorcentral.com/panasonic_ae4000_projector_review.htm?em) to help pull off that trick until I can add an anamorphic lens.
Cables from Blue Jean Cable (http://www.bluejeanscable.com/).
And if you come out and help me build it, I'll play the 1812 concussion section for you!

I've got an Emotiva Ultra 10 Sub, it is a musical little beast- that works well to clear the room of animals when I need to.

The Emotiva XP-3 would be a great companion to that receiver- let it power the fronts (The M80s are pretty power hungry), and let the receivers amps handle the side and rear channels.

Interesting idea. 300w into the M80's could provide interesting results.
Plus I could probably drop down to a lower model on the Denon and save about the same cost as the XP-3.
Any thoughts on how the m80's compare to the ERT 8.3's ?
(Other than the m80's being in stock)

In the Emotiva lounge, there are a few people who have gone from Axiom M80s to the ERT 8.3s and been very happy.
The people who have Axiom M80s got REALLY happy once they added an XPA series amp.
If you go on emotivalounge.com - many Emotiva owners demo the gear for interested parties.

Things are starting to come together. My new Oppo Blu-Ray player arrives tomorrow, the Projector (http://www.projectorcentral.com/Panasonic-PT-AE4000U.htm) came today and this weekend I'm heading across town to audition for an in home audition of the Axiom speakers attached to the emotiva amps.

Lemme know how the audition goes. I got to hear a pair of ERT 8.3s powered by a pair of XPA-1 monoblocks; and it was DELICIOUS!

First off, I discovered it's pronounced "E moe tea va" rather than "Eee moe tive". So much for my street cred.
The demo system I listed to was, err how to put this... interesting. Massive Axiom M80's, Pre-amps and amps all shoehorned into a living room I'd guess was about 12x12'. Total overkill. No attempts at all to make the room acoustically friendly and I doubt we used even 1/3 of the speakers power, yet they sounded like demons howling in heat (in a good way). Totally amazing. The DVD-A's and SACD's we listed to made CD's sound muddy in comparison. For the movie, the surrounds blended in perfectly, accenting the film without drawing unwanted attention. I can't wait to hear how all this works in the room I'm custom tailoring for use as a home theater.

Heh.
We had some friends over for an informal gathering yesterday. I took the guys down to the cave to demo the new theater system. Around here most of my peers think Bose is the epitome of sound reproduction.
I started with the opening of Fellowship Of The Ring, the demise of Sauron. The SVS subwoofer did it's thing. Whooooooooommmmmmm....
Then I queued up The Fifth Element scene where Lilu takes a dive off the ledge. The surrounds are used to great effect in that scene.
And just to be nasty, I finished with an SACD: Dark Side of the Moon. Money.

I think I will add one of these (http://www.bgw.com/subwoofers/m2200t.asp) to the home theatre for better low end
