The other day a friend met me at my place so we could go out and distract me. She had her bird with her. The cats - who I thought would go after it - were terrified of a REAL bird IN THE HOUSE!!!! Sputnik was the most curious, but then she did the bottlebrush tail and hid behind a cabinet to give us the single-eye surveillance. I have never actually seen a short-haired cat bottlebrush their tail like that - not in person.

My mother's 25lb declawed (in front) linebacker of a cat can take down a hummingbird, as he demonstrated recently. My four? Excited about birds only when they're on the other side of the glass. Although they're pretty good about taking care of bugs.

What kind of bird was it?

Growing up we had cats that were expert bird hunters when outside but showed absolutely no interest in the birds (cockatiels and finches mostly) inside.

My current cat once attacked a flock of wild turkeys (momentarily riding on the back of a big old tom). No idea how she'd react to a bird inside the house since I'd never let a bird inside the house (growing up with them I am too aware of how insane they are).

Speaking of pets eating different animals, I got a free sample of dog food the other day. It was made with real kangaroo meat! The dog hated it....

Also, my dog is named Pooh Bear. When I signed up for the Pals card from petsmart, I just put "Pooh" on it for the birthday promo they do. I got the email the other day saying "A birthday gift for POON". All in caps! POON!

My cat story is my cat growing up was on the side yard. It was only about 6 foot wide (the sideyard, not the cat). Something that looked to me to be a butterfly fluttered down in a long slow swooping arch down to where my cat was sitting. It got right about 3 feet above her, when she lept up and caught it in her mouth. It looked strangly as though it flew right into her mouth! But then it started squeeling. This made my skin crawl as I new butterfies didn't squeel. Then the cat opened her mouth to get a better grip, but it flew out and away. It was at that time that I could see that it was a humming bird. And I stood there with my mouth hanging open over what I just saw!

I'm glad our current cat has not discovered hummingbirds, and in general prefers rodents. I'd like for her to prefer gophers, but I think she rather likes mice.

I think our cat is going to start eating Doritos and wanting to go to Phish concerts.

Fudge incident? No. She is 15 years old and has been showing signs of possible dementia or some other brain abnormality. Among other things, she has been having odd behavior such as sitting peacefully on our laps and then suddenly attacking us - we think she suddenly gets confused and gets overly defensive and attacks us.

Susan has started blowing smoke into her face, which she enjoys. We have noticed that she does MUCH better when she gets "medicated."

She had a seizure about a year ago. The doctor said there wasn't much to do unless she started having them regularly. The other night I thought she was "checking out" as she was extremely lethargic - I stayed up with her until about 2:00 in the morning, just in case. She seemed to be better the next day, but her appetite is down (she is normally psycho kitty in the morning before she gets fed).

I think I've finally managed to tire out our hound. Took him to doggie day-care over lunchtime, and ran him next to the bike to get home. Hadn't tried running him like that before, thought there was a good chance he was going to take me down by pulling sideways or running into the bike. But he did well, and is still sleeping, an hour later. It's just under a mile from day-care to home, but it's more than I can run, so I thought I'd try the bike.

Mwah to y'all for the good wedding vibes!

So, wedding rehearsal the afternoon before, outside, my not-very-high heels are sinking into the grass. I introduce myself to one of the groom's relatives, "I'm Helen, this is Tom, and this (throwing my arm around the woman next to me) is our daughter."

Oops, it was my sun-wrinkled sister. We get that straightened out and then my not-so-high-heel disengages from the grass and I stumble forward so I explain ... ... "I'm not drunk!"

Yeah, that relative was real convinced.

Otherwise, it was perfection. Even though it rained the day of the ceremony and we held it on the iconic porch of the Grand Hotel instead of the tea garden, it was perfection. How often in life do you get to say there's not a thing you would have changed?

I hope you all can get to Mackinac Island some day if you haven't already been. It's Main Street USA come to life.

Same as everyone else: Being dead.

So what is the ultimate fate of the very very naughty?

Vague.

Most discussion in Torah is in terms of punishment during life. Discussion of afterlife punishment comes in 2 forms. First is simply that, unlike those that have been good, you will not be reunited with your loved ones. Then there's talk of the "World To Come" which gets used somewhat interchangeably to refer to the spiritual life after death AND the world reboot that will happen after the arrival of the messiah (not Jesus). Basically, lack of goodness will lead to less standing in the World To Come.

As a practical matter, those are topics that only come up for the most part in circles doing deep reads of Torah/Talmud/rabbinical writings. Discussion of afterlife and eternal punishment/reward is not common in Jewish education.

Other religions with no, or essentialy no, afterlife element include:

Confuscianism, Epicurianism, Shinto (mostly they leave that to the Buddhist half of life), and Taoism.

On the hell question, that's a long running debate in various Christian circles. I think it was This American Life that did a long story on the reaction when the preacher at a fundamentalist megachurch decided he no longer believes in the existence of hell.

The general gist I got from answers to the question, "Why should I be good?" growing up was, "Because then you'd be an a-hole. And nobody likes an a-hole, including God." I find that a much more tenable moral compass than the reward/punishment message.

SzczerbiakManiac

What is your normal way?
I think the two-shell-shuffle is neither faster nor easier and definitely messier.
If you have a gadget specifically designed to separate yolks, that might be a push.

RStar

I've always used the two shell shuffle, and find it both easy and non-messy. The other way I've seen others do it is through their fingers- messy and slimy. Though the water bottle trick is impressive when you have an audience!

Or if you need a lot of eggs seperated, you could crack them all in a big bowl, then seperate all of the egg yolks out in one step (emptying the single yolk out of the bottle each time, of course). Just make sure it's not a nasty spit infested water bottle full of germs!

Alex
08-25-2012, 12:50 PM
No, separating in the shell is what I consider the normal way. Takes about five seconds an egg and have never made any mess with it.

Well played, CP.:) Thank you!

Lately I've been buying dresses and thinking, why don't I wear these all the time? They often don't do well sitting on park benches and playing in the sand box. But if I'm going to a meeting or coffee or window shopping, why not?

There were some other moms with the same idea that day, but we were in the minority in a sea of momjeans both literal and figurative. Almost sadder is the worn out, outdated, used-to-be office wear.

I tried my hand at archery today. It was my first attempt since the 5th grade, and I only had the strength to shoot three times, but apparently I might actually be good at this with some practice. Shot three times from the 10ft line, which isn't hugely impressive, but for my first shoot in umpty umpty years I shot the first over the target, the second almost in the outermost ring, and the second in the second-from-outermost ring. I guess I have a new hobby!

Might go to Pennsic next year as a combat archer. As part of an all-female squad with magnetic hello kitty ears and sailor moon pigtails for our helms. I mean, what's more embarrassing - being killed from a distance by archers or being killed from a distance by a bunch of female archers archers dressed like armored hello kitties?

Dad Wears Dress in Solidarity With Dress-Loving Son (http://www.advocate.com/society/modern-families/2012/08/28/dad-wears-dress-solidarity-dress-loving-son)A German father said that he sometimes wears skirts to support his son, who also prefers to wear skirts and dresses.

Nils Pickert and his family moved from West Berlin to a more traditional village in southern Germany, Gawker reports. After Pickert's son expressed worries that other kids at school would mock him for wearing dresses, his father decided to also don a dress in solidarity.

"I didn't want to talk my son into not wearing dresses and skirts," he said. "He didn't make friends in doing that in Berlin already and after a lot of contemplation I had only one option left: To broaden my shoulders for my little buddy and dress in a skirt myself."

Anywhere I have access to a computer. Go to the local library site, search for book. If it has an e-version I log in and select the one for Kindle. It redirects me to my Kindle account on Amazon. Some books (like the Southern Vampire series) have to be downloaded to the computer and copied to the Kindle using USB cable and others are delivered using the Kindle sync technology.

The new Kindles handle PDFs so I think some of the regular ePub .pdf formats will work too. I need to try it.

However, in case it gets deleted:After having been told my danglies looked like an elderly rastafarian I decided to take the plunge and buy some of this as previous shaving attempts had only been mildly succesful and I nearly put my back out trying to reach the more difficult bits. Being a bit of a romantic I thought I would do the deed on the missus's birthday as a bit of a treat. I ordered it well in advance and working in the North sea I considerd myself a bit above some of the characters writing the previous reviews and wrote them off as soft office types...oh my fellow sufferers how wrong I was. I waited until the other half was tucked up in bed and after giving some vague hints about a special surprise I went down to the bathroom. Initially all went well and I applied the gel and stood waiting for something to happen. I didn't have long to wait. At first there was a gentle warmth which in a matter of seconds was replaced by an intense burning and a feeling I can only describe as like being given a barbed wire wedgie by two people intent on hitting the ceiling with my head. Religion hadn't featured much in my life until that night but I suddenly became willing to convert to any religion to stop the violent burning around the turd tunnel and what seemed like the destruction of the meat and two veg. Struggling to not bite through my bottom lip I tried to wash the gel of in the sink and only succeeded in blocking the plughole with a mat of hair. Through the haze of tears I struggled out of the bathroom across the hall into the kitchen by this time walking was not really possible and I crawled the final yard to the fridge in the hope of some form of cold relief. I yanked the freezer draw out and found a tub of ice cream, tore the lid of and positioned it under me. The relief was fantastic but only temporary as it melted fairly quickly and the fiery stabbing soon returned .Due to the shape of the ice cream tub I hadn't managed to give the starfish any treatment and I groped around in the draw for something else as I was sure my vision was going to fail fairly soon.I grabbed a bag of what I later found out was frozen sprouts and tore it open trying to be quiet as I did so.I took a handful of them and tried in vain to clench some between the cheeks of my arse. This was not doing the trick as some of the gel had found it's way up the chutney channel and it felt like the space shuttle was running it's engines behind me. This was probably and hopefully the only time in my life I was going to wish there was a gay snowman in the kitchen which should give you some idea of the depths I was willing to sink to in order to ease the pain. The only solution my pain crazed mind could come up with was to gently ease one of the sprouts where no veg had gone before. unfortunately, alerted by the strange grunts coming from the kitchen the other half chose that moment to come and investigate and was greeted by the sight of me, arse in the air, strawberry ice cream dripping from my bell end pushing a sprout up my arse while muttering..." Ooooh that feels good ". Understandably this was a shock to her and she let out a scream and as I hadn't heard her come in it caused an involutary spasm of shock in myself which resulted in the sprout being ejected at quite some speed in her direction. I can understand that having a sprout farted against your leg at 11 at night in the kitchen probably wasn't the special surprise she was expecting and having to explain to the kids the next day what the strange hollow in the ice cream was didn't improve my status...So to sum it up Veet removes hair, dignity and self respect...:)

So, yesterday I was on a boring conference call and was zooming around Google Maps. At one point I zoomed out and then zoomed in and noticed that on the third level in the first city markers appeared on the map.

And some of them struck me as odd. Portland is there, but not San Francisco. Houston, Dallas and San Antonio but no New Orleans. No Miami, Atlanta, etc.

Anyway, then my brain wandered and I wondered which was the most remote of those few cities honored enough to be listed at the 3rd level of Google Maps zoom.

I can now tell you the answer is Darwin, Australia, at about 2619 km from the nearest listed city of Adelaide.

The two closest cities are Tallinn, Estonia, and Helsinki, Finland, at just 84 km away from each other (with Akita and Marioka Japan within the margin of error at 90 km).

You might think this is why they shouldn't put me on boring conference calls. You'd not be entirely correct.

Me being able to show my work is why they shouldn't put me on boring conference calls.

Possibly a fax machine? We've had that before.

True story. One of our senior execs works only via fax. No email. Hard copy fax. So for a few years he'd sign stuff and send it back to his admin who never go it. I sent it, didn't get it, resend it.

After a few years of this he actually called the number that was printed on the top of the fax and found out it was someone's home in NJ. The admin had gotten a new fax machine and when she put in the parameters inverted two numbers. So he had been faxing to some poor guy in NJ's phone for two years. And at wacky hours since he's west coast.

I still own one. I don't think it can print anymore due to nobody makes a replacement for whatever the heck it uses (some weird part nobody uses any more, it was a cheap fax to begin with). I should get rid of it, it's not like we have a phone line anyway.

My homeowner's association hired a new management company about a year ago that seemed a little unprofessional. It took them a couple of months to start sending out bills on a regular basis and the return envelope they send with the bill is just a small stationery envelope with their address stamped on it. But they seemed to be doing okay until now.

My last statement showed that the previous payment I'd sent them hadn't been credited and, sure enough, the check has not been cashed. But there was no late fee on the statement. I sent them a check for the current and past due amount and have been checking my bank account to see if it's been cashed. I called earlier this week and they told they were working on checks at that moment and call tomorrow. I had an appointment in the area of their office today so I decided to stop by if the check still hadn't cleared the bank. The receptionist checked with someone in back and told me there was a stack of checks they were working on and to call back Monday. I told her I would just check my bank account.

The fact that there was no late fee charged makes me think they really are backed up. But really? What kind of business operates like this? I pay my bills on time and I don't appreciate not getting the same courtesy on the other end.

Any good gift ideas?

On of my in-laws is having a hard time of it. His wife was in a fairly serious car accident and she has been (and will be) in the hospital for an extended amount of time while the docs do what they can do rebuild various parts of her.

The family has rallied round her in heart warming fashion suitable for a hallmark movie so I think all that can be done for her is being done.

I know from experience how heavy the burden of caring for someone else can be, so I'd like to send him a little 'Thinking of you/pick me up' type of thing.

Any suggestions? I know he's uber careful about what he eats (ie no sees candy). I don't think he reads much. He has a long drive to/from the hospital on a regular basis. Oh and he just sent his only daughter off to college as well.

Might he be interested in audio books/podcasts/music listening then? Something to make those long drives a little easier, like an audio player and/or convenient accessory for said player?

Also gift cards for meals - so he doesn't have to cook. If you live close enough home made freezable meals, lasagna, enchiladas that he can just pop in the oven.

Also if you live close enough any chores like laundry, housecleaning, yard work so he doesn't have that burden on him as well.

While Buckyballs are nice, They do tend to wear poorly. The coating comes off with use.
