After an evening of intense consideration and then sleeping on it to give my subconscious time to bat it around I have come to the following conclusion:

I concur.
I was watching Fellowship of the Ring last night and thought Sean Bean's reaction to getting hit by three arrows was convincing. It would not feel good at all. Also, I think pulling an arrow out of your flesh would be even more painful. Unless you did it really quickly...

I had a fun weekend but, damn, am I exhausted!

Highlights include:
3 month old kitten rescue and finding a safe place for her in our house.
Quilt show at the Long Beach Convention Center
Wonderful house guests Friday and Saturday
Lunch with DP/FP/GG & Jan
More quilt show
Great music at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday

Oh, and I worked (which I'm doing 7 days a week these days).

I disagree. At the risk of entering into an teleologically ontological discussion of the merits and disingenuations of said conundrum, I would have to suggest that even if the form of impact were less than injurious the intent and willingness (or perhaps negligence and inattention) that lead to such impact would carry through the day on still totally sucking.

One might respond vis-a-vis the argument from nerfness in which one is not only struck by an arrow in such a way as no harm is caused but also with an arrow of such material that no harm is possible. In a situation of such extremity it would continue to totally suck in that one is such an oaf as to be unable to avoid impact with said trifle.

There also exists, in a post-Freudian deconstructionist interpretation of the problem statement, the theory that the arrow in question is not, per se, actually an arrow but instead a penis. In which case it could be argued that while "totally suck" might not actually happen, it is without doubt true that some person involved in the impact scenario will wish it did.

Yes.. Midpines is West of where they are at by quite a ways. The fire location is off of 49 which is the road into Yosemite through Mariposa. It's not as heavily populated as the Oakhurst area where they live. I'm sure they are getting lots of smoke from the fire, depending on the wind direction. I think they picked a good time to go out of town (they are going to Jackson in Amador County to visit my Nephew).

If a fire was set near Oakhurst or Fishcamp I'd be really worried. There are LOTS of home off of highway 41.

Holy hell I missed some excitement. There was apparently some nut bag in the corner of our parking lot taking pot shots at cars and people with a bb gun and a slingshot. And when the cops arrived he took a couple shots at them before a rubber bullet or beanbag gun put a stop to that.

I should have stayed home today. Fortunately I'm parked just outside of the area the cops have blocked off.

Today's craziness was bookended by bizzaro antics in our complex's "street" (the road that runs around the inside perimeter of the complex for garage and parking stall access).

First, on my way out the door to work I hit my garage door opener....*thwack*...There's some utility crew digging up the pavement and they've parked one of their pickups in front of my garage. Don't think they even noticed it happened. I had to go out and get their attention. They promptly moved their truck out of the way. Except they moved the one that was not in front of my garage, despite me saying "garage" twice and pointing directly at the truck I was talking about. It's moments like these I really appreciate my boss's lax eye when it comes to precise arrival time).

Anyway, now when I got home, I turned onto our stretch of that same road and I see a giant ass moving truck. Full on Enterprise tractor trailer. Why anyone would need a tractor trailer to move into this place is beyond me. But hey, whatever, it wasn't in front of my garage and there was room on one side to pass. I'll just let that dude pass first...that dude right there who's stopping...right next to the trailer, forming a now 3-vehicle wide (there was already someone parked on the other side) road block, and giving me the "one second" sign.

Dude proceeds to challenge the very fabric of space and time with his definition of "1 second" as he opens his trunk, removes a box and disappears inside his condo's back gate. Only to return moments later...and produce a second box, proceeded by an altogether presumptuous raising of his index finger, indicating that, yes, he knew full well that his initial "one second" was an outright lie and oh by the way, here's another one. Surely he meant it the second time!

Yeah, I wasn't going to wait to find out, I backed out to drive the 1/4 mile lap around the other way. Sure enough before I finished turning around I spotted him reaching for box #3. But whatever, a 30 second delay reaching my garage isn't the end of the world. And hey, if I translate into that dude's definition of a second, it'd be somewhere around 1.7 nanosecons. Who can get upset about 1.7 nanoseconds?

Something felt very offkilter today.

Something felt very offkilter today.
Just to expand on that:

I'm no believer in "earthquake weather", but it's the kinda day that makes you think. I mean, a huge amount of energy is involved, before during and after, the earth is literally vibrating long after we stop feeling. I wouldn't be surprised if that were enough to add just enough chaos into the social machinery to throw those little matters of timing and convenience temoprarily get derailed.

I once wondered the same thing when one showed up at our complex. I mean there wasn't an apartment bigger than 800 sq. ft. in the place.

Turns out it was a mass operation. One truck did something like 15 places and then delivered all of the contents. Apparently it works out when the movers don't need their stuff in a new place at the quickest possible moment.

What I found weird today is I didn't have my usual "I think we're going to have an earthquake today" feeling. Sounds hokey, but it's accurate. I had a "man, it's tornado weather" the day tornado's touched in Riverside. Keep in mind my only experience with them is from the news, the movies and the book Night of the Twisters. It was literally a random thought.

Other than a really crappy morning at work the day felt normal. My co-worker said it felt like "earthquake weather" but it's hot, it's dry and it's July. It's normal weather.

The past 3 weeks have been odd, and off. It's almost a joke "something is off in the cosmos" - but GD has a good point. A huge amount of energy was expelled from the earth today. Maybe the past 3 weeks was a cumulative of it building.

So I'm sitting here at 1am, still unable to sleep. I know I'm an insomniac, but this is ridiculous. We went to bed around 10, which is early, but I figured I could use the sleep, the way I've been feeling in the mornings lately.

The closest I've come is (apparently dream) visions of dying in an airplane crash, being aware of my pancake status once I've hit the ground, hoping I'd freeze to death and not feel the impact, and then something about being a metal plate used to cook garlic and mushrooms.

Something is indeed off. I tend to feel environmental energy (like storms) even if I can't articulate it. I hope it settles down so I can sleep. For now, I've got the LoT and a cup of hot chocolate made with milk. Here's hoping for some sleep! (and good dreams this time)

Oh how to even describe this? NSFW! Imagine a huge "football" shaped cut of red meat, cut right down the middle long ways, then imagine a celebrity chef taking his hands and parting the two halves slightly and sticking his fingers down between the halves... and all the places a LoTer's brain could take it.

I think the spider pool would be much more entertaining, with or without hotties posing in front of it.

Wired jaw? I missed what happened to you...
What happened? Surely there are other ways to diet...

I don't talk much (was a bargaining factor to go on the cruise in may though), but around a year ago I began a procedure to correct my bite:

Step 1 I got braces put on then adjust the teeth and such for around a year,

Step 2 happened on July 23 where the operation occurred and they broke / reset the upper and lower jaw

This involves a lot of stuff like recuperating from it for like 3 months... week 1 was liquids / wired shut, week 2 and so on is mush and whatever im allowed to have, rubber banding my mouth during certain times of the day... between enjoying mush. at least its not bad mush!

Step 3 is when they go back to moving teeth...

step 4 is when they finally Finnish.

So, bunny relations are gradually getting better. Until the stitches are out, which won't be until next Saturday, we're taking things even slower than we would otherwise. Right now we alternate time with one out and the other in their respective cages.

At this point, Munchkin's stopped playing what was her favorite taunting game, namely wander around the room casually until she's sure no one's paying attention, and then charge Little's cage (oh, btw, "Little" is our current name for her). That kept things exciting. She was also in the habit of sitting next to Little's cage and giving us a look that seemed to be saying, "I just want to kill it a little, could you open the cage up, just for a sec?"

For her part, Little is unperturbed. Other than when Munchkin lunges at her, she doesn't shy away from the sides of the cage and merrily goes sniffing around Munchkin's cage when she's out, still convinced that she can get Munchkin to submit to her will.

Munchkin is spending less time lurking around Little's cage when she's out and is falling back into her old habbit of being antisocial up on the top step. Which, in bunny terms, we think is excellent progress.

My transaction at Crate & Barrel today, purchasing 4 glasses and a mixing bowl as wedding gifts:

Cashier: The total is $89.10
Me: How much was that bowl again?
Cashier: $32.95
Me: If the glasses were $10 each and the bowl was less than $40, why is the total before tax $82?
Cashier: The total is $89.10
Me: Yes, I see that, but that's not right. The glasses cost $40, the bowl costs less than $40, the total before tax should be less than $80.
Cashier: That's the total before tax, it's $82.70
Me: That's not right
Cashier: The total is $89.10. Do you want to look at my screen?
Me: Yes, I do. See. That says $39.80 for the 4 glasses. That says $32.95 for the one bowl. But the total says $82.70. That can't be.
Cashier: Oh.

He then quickly punched a bunch of buttons and the total changed to what it should have been.

What the hell? There was nothing other than those two items listed on that screen. From the numbers I'd guess that there was an extra glass scanned it a $9.95, but it didn't show on that screen. The 4 glasses were grouped together and showed a single price of $39.80. Seemed a little fishy.

But worse was that it took 5 minutes to convince this guy that <$40+<$40 shouldn't be more than $80.

I think because 99.9% of anyone on a cash register these days cannot even make change. Back in my days of retail (when dinosaurs walked the earth) we had to know or learn how to count change back. Now all cashiers do is scan the item and believe the screen, no thought involved whatsoever.

Hey, I'm a cashier!!

But, really, some days I don't want to think and do leave it to the register. I try and pay attention, though. I don't like guests to be ripped off.

I'm sure I'm not innocent, I've made mistakes. BUT they will have anyone cashier. My sweet little friend, straight from the Philipines, they had her cashiering. They had me shadow her and then keep an eye on her. She finally asked me, showing me the money, the dimes 'These are 1 cent?' and the quarters, with all of the different state designs, totally confused her!!

One cashier totally just let the screen do the talking and almost gave the guest back over $60 in change! I forget exactly what was the problem but their total was only about $10.

Well, GD, good for you!! That is your right, too bad that it happened, I think it makes everyone look bad when someone screws up so bad. I wonder why it happened? Did you look at your receipt? Any clues?

{oh, and I'm really not offended....I am one who would like to think I am good at math and money....some days though when things are hectic and too many guests going through, I'd rather not think.}

MouseWife

I always count back change. I always say the total, verify the bill they've given me {no place to set it while making change, I think that is a mistake as they can dispute the bill given} and count back the change. Always. I can't believe it when the young people just hand the change back.

I think I am more nice than I am efficient. :D

Earlier today I had a really nice lunch with a friend and did a lot of walking in a botanical garden. I didn't get lost (much), though it was very convenient that they had maps available. Even with the map, sometimes I wasn't always sure where we were: not everything is on the map.

This friend's cat ate a string and she's worried about the guy. Anybody have cats that ate string? Do they poop it out ok?

I worked tonight. My friends are jealous that I have a job. Tonight's show was the summer-school algebra class graduation. I have no idea what it was about except that they gave certificates and coffee mugs. They didn't need us to pay attention, so we didn't.

Coming home, my husband isn't here. Huh. He's always here. Sent a text asking where he was and a few minutes later I remembered tonight he was at softball and it's a late game. It's odd to not have him here. He's home now.

This is true.

That said, nothing qualifies me to have a successful business except for the fact that I have a unique product and good presentation. Unqualified doesn't mean disqualified. Make some cupcakes - or whatever you like making - try them out on friends. Try a farmer's mkt. See if people will give you money for them. Hire someone else to make them and spend all the money you make. (I've done all but the second part of the last step - HA!)

From experience, it will pass. However, it might need a bit of help, because it won't pass all at once, depending on the length. They might, um, drag it behind 'em a bit until ya grab hold and pull while trying not to gag. If there is too much resistance, then trim it off and repeat as each section passes. It is really not a pleasant experience, especially for the unfortunate human. Oh, and I will also say that it's not exactly clean either - ya know how rock candy made??? I'll leave it at that.

By the time I got a printed receipt the error had already been corrected. With the numbers involved I have to assume that a glass got scanned twice, but it was nowhere to be seen on the summary screen. That's the weirdest part, I looked at his screen and saw two lines - $39.80 and $32.95 with $82.70 as the total on the bottom. That's what made it so fishy.

Last year sometime I posted about a problem I was having getting a refund from Sprint. I finally gave up. Then I found an interview with Sprint's CEO and he mentioned the name of the executive in charge of customer service. A few weeks ago I sent a letter to the customer service guy and copied the CEO. I explained that even though I was happy with my phone and my phone service I didn't plan to renew my contract because I'd been unable to resolve the refund issue. Well, now they're calling me. Ha! The woman who's working on it even apologized when she called me Tuesday for not calling Monday because she was on jury duty.

Today- I put in 19.5 miles on my mountain bike and 4.5 on the road bike. Plus we walked the dog. Am I skinny yet? :) Had a great BBQ with the bike club on the beach after the mountain bike ride. And sushi for dinner. :) Happy me.

Yeah for you! :snap: I rode almost ten miles {this time we didn't take a break in the middle, we rode the entire time, including some hills, nothing like yours, I am sure 'cause I stay away from as many as I can!} and only had one breakfast burrito. But, we went to the movies where we did eat candy {the snack sized kind? I buy that now, $1 for ten little bars at Target then we pick from those} with popcorn and a water.

I did buy a journal from Borders to help keep track of just what I eat. I think it is true that it is easy to overlook somethings, eat absentmindedly.

I wish I had stuck to my guns with my work outs before, but, this year it seems everything is working against me. I've had sinus infections galore, a back injury, pulled this or that, and now the garage is a mess because I was clearing out closets and such.

Anyone going to the Projekt Revolution? I am, didn't think I was. Now I have to find a hotel room. Anyone use Hotwire.com? They've said they have a room in the Irvine/Costa Mesa area. It looks like an area where I've seen some nice places but I know that there can be not so nice places, too.

Anyone book with them? Are 3.5 stars really 3.5? Has anyone been disappointed? Anyone been surprised? :0) I won't book anything right away.

I would book something by Disneyland but our APs are blocked that Monday.

Good job, MW! Ten miles is good!

Tonight was kind of obnoxious but it was only 5 hours of work. We loaded out Singin' in the Rain- tonight we dismantled the rain deck and its neighborhood house backdrop. Pieces eighteen feet high, framed in square aluminum, awkward and crazy heavy. I think the truck is packed wrong but that's not my decision or choice.

They're loading out the most of it tomorrow but I was not needed or available. That works. :) Four semi-trucks they're loading tomorrow. Bleh. I think I'm losing my taste for the heavy lifting. I enjoy my coworkers, so I stay, but that's about it.

Latest articles in the press over here: "Road to Ruin with iPhone" - Owners are beginning to complain about huge bills using the iPhone.

...seems the GPS application is mostly to blame, since it refreshes and loads maps each time you use it, instead of saving or caching them. Typical is 9.2Mb downloaded and 659Kb uploaded during a 1 hour, 35km (21.75 Mile) trip.

I use a phone headset at work (it spends most of the day on my head). I am still at work, awaiting a phone call to green light a project (so I can send the PO out and head home). Of course, the headset is on (I'm weird that way). The headset is starting to make occasional noises - like a spaceship landing.

Either we are about to be invaded, or I will be needing a new headset soon.

When my cell phone syncs with the mothership er.. network it makes the computer speakers make all sorts of weird noises.

Alex

Yeah, the static is usually caused by someone holding an electronic device too close to a headset. I can usually tell when someone is reading their blackberry while on a conference call.

However, it can be low battery on your end.

(This is assuming you have the same type of headsets we -- and most of my previous employers -- use.)

I did the front desk at this Skateboard company once and I had to use this headset with the litle mic on the end. When I got bored, I would look off to the side and say "Hi, I'm Mark, your Time-Life operator and have I got a deal for you." People would look at me strange. Like they never dreamed about that...

I am familiar with the cell phone noise - this was different. More like the sound when a transistor dies. Also, my phone was not in a different position than normal.

Sometimes, the best course of action in life is to take the high road. Yeah, the boss is a jerk. But by NOT acknowledging the jerk's birthday, it would probably just make the situation worse. Whereas, if even the empty gesture of going out to lunch with boss and pretending to have a good time, at the very worst, the situation at the office doesn't slide down further.

And sometimes, once people feel that they might be "accepted", they occasionally lighten up. It's rare, but it does happen.

But JWB still gets to bitch about it with us of course!

I have been fighting with getting Susan's email setup. It just didn't want to work. C'mon... it's freakin EMAIL!!!

I was trying every variable I could think of: verifying that I had the password correct by logging in via web mail, checking port settings, whether her account name was supposed to include the @ sign and domain name, waving a chicken over my head. I threw the whole gauntlet at it.

Out of curiosity, I set up her Mindspring mail account. It set up easily and as it was supposed to. Okay, so the problem is with DSL Extreme.

So, I go to look up their number again. Go to the web site to get the number again. While there, I see a special message about "If you are having troubles setting up your email..." and think "AHA! they have a known problem!" Recently, they changed their system and required people to have passwords longer than eight characters. I had changed Susan's the other night (her old one was only 7 characters), and thought maybe something came up because of everyone changing their password.

So I click on the link and there was a guide for setting up Entourage (which is what she uses for mail). I check all of the steps to ensure i had things set up properly (I did!).

So next, I decide to copy the actual text of what is supposed to be in each mail box and paste it where applicable.

But when I pasted, I noticed a slight shift in the text. Hmm...

After several rounds of Paste, Undo, Paste, Undo, I made a remarkable and important discovery:

I hope one works out, Morri. I'll let you know if my situation ammends itself or if anything else comes to mind.

But heck yes, if me or someone can help you, because hotel rates are pretty high.

Anyone been to the Irvine place where they do concerts? Outdoors, I guess, where ever this projekt revolution is being held Sunday. Verizon Amp?

I would like to know, are there 'real' bathrooms? I know it isn't a big deal but it is something I am curious about. I am imagining the heat, the humidity, I just gotta know. Do not spare me, tell me the truth!!

Thank you. :0)

Yes, there are real bathrooms, and lots of them. When you walk in (up the really long path) if you go to your right there will be some - and usually a long line. If you keep walking down that path you'll come across a 2nd set which usually has no line. Each level has some too. The lawn level shares them with the level right below (forget what it's called) and the lines get long.

The margaritas are pre-made and suck (worse then pre-made usually does).

Parking - if it's set up like every other concert I've been to, when you turn in, go to your right for free parking (or you can pay $20 for "premier"). It's a pain to get out of, so I'd suggest parking close to an aisle and exit (and walk the extra distance). Also, back in.

And it gets chilly at night when the sun is going down. Might want to bring a light sweater.

Thank you, BtD!!! Yikes, $20 for premier? *sigh* I'll park with the others...I'm getting in on comps, no reason to go all Hollywood and pay that much for parking. Thanks for the tips on the bathrooms, too. LOL I probably will stay away from the margaritas but will drink a lot of water. Wish they'd let us wear Camelbacks...

I also hope they don't check for cameras. I am hopefully going to a meet & greet or the Verizon tent where I may have a chance to have a picture taken with Chris Cornell. *sigh*

Thanks you guys! With so much other drama in my life, it's these things that keep me afloat. Your help makes them less stressful. :snap:

Go buy a Blizzard at a participating Dairy Queen today. All proceeds go to Children's Miracle Network.

Hubbo and I shared a small Girl Scout Cookie one. So good.

Wow. That caught me off guard. For the past few years the CMN Blizzard Day was a little later in the month of August. Shameo n me for not paying attention to that.

Check the tickets - they will say if cameras are allowed or not. Since the popularity explosion of cell phone cameras, most venues allow still cameras (digital or regular) and request that you don't use video functionality.

I think they allow food and sealed beverages.
General Rules: No chairs, tables or barbecues! No cameras or recording equipment! No plastic containers! No alcoholic beverages or coolers! No Backpacks!. It also says parking is $6. When we've been tehre we always park for free, so i can't confirm that there is $6 parking. Maybe the free parking is normally $6?

When you leave, the traffic control is a PITA. The nice thing is that you are right by 3 on ramps to the 5. If they make you go right, and you find Bake or Lake Forest you can get to the 5 from there.

If they make you go left the 5 is right around there.

I hope I'm not overloading you with info. It was super confusing the first time I went, and I live right there.
